“Low-standard tourist trap with 1970s decor”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 19, 2013

The hotel seems to be frozen in time about anno 1970. Really low standard.
Our double room (115 EUR/night) was 2 m wide and the double bed just 140 cm wide. In what universe does that pass as a double bed? The rooms depicted on booking.com are all from much bigger rooms (in the same awful style).
The hotel is located in a busy and very touristy street; city centre and public transport are easily reached by foot.
The room itself appeared clean. The pillows were too big and my girlfriend didn't sleep well.
The breakfast was just 5 EUR/day, but remarkably not worth the money (unless you have a hankering for cellophane-wrapped crackers and sour coffee). Find a cafe close by and have your coffee there - or even better: find another hotel.

It was also a last minute choice for me. Booked it in the morning via booking, it was stated that no deposit was required, but around 1pm the credit card was charged in full. I know this because my bank send me SMS for every cc transaction above a certain amount.
Wifi in lobby only. But I found another wifi with its name from my room.

Room was hot, without ac or fan; so you open the window, and let the noise come in.
Also I was worried about sleeping with the window open, because anyone can walk in, literally

It was a "no other choice" booking and it turned out a very average experience. Situated very close to the train station (you can't get lost) a bit old building (typical of Venice to be fair) so noisy. As for the service it was Dr Jeckyl & Mr Hyde with the morning shift guy being extremely nice and helpful while the evening shift guy behaved like a prison guard, with not even a scent of smile and friendliness and very abrupt when talking to you. Breakfast is poor and try to ask for a non-front street facing room to sleep quietly

Room Tip: non street facing rooms

Very conveniently located. It is easy to find. You can leave your luggage after check-out. The room is clean. A good breakfast. The staff is attentive. There is a Russian-speaking maid. Very good choice for 1-2 nights.

We had just 36 hours in Venice. The location and helpful service of this hotel had us from train to hotel to vaporretto in under 30 minutes! (The map they provided at check-in is great- we were truly out the door and seeing the sights within minutes!) This was a great way to maximize time an minimize stress, both coming to, and departing from Venice.

Our room faced the street but was still very quiet. We thought it was perfect. It was not romantic, but it was nice- we could not have been more pleased. They also provided storage for our bags after check out, so we really got the most out of our time in Venice. A+ for convenience and practical service.

Room Tip: Even the street rooms are quiet in the evening. I would suggest requesting an extra pillow if you l...

This is our 4th visit to this 3 star hotel over a period of years. Our first criteria was location and this hotel suited us well being only minutes from the bus and rail stations as well as vaporetto. Price wise was very good value for money with a good selection available at breakfast. (Obviously others thought so too because of the number of residents seen taking carry outs.) As a palazzo all rooms are different and while on this occasion our room had no view to speak of it didn't detract from our enjoyment. As with previous visits the reception staff were polite and helpful

Currently staying at Universo.....
great location, don't have to drag the bags across Italy to find the hotel.
Just round the corner from my train station on the edge of the canal/s.

Staff trying hard but this is faulty towers....minimal English, big smile,
in-house phone doesn't work, ok but I'm at the top of 5 flights of stairs, no lift.

Reasonably clean, wifi only works in reception and no plugs for recharging,
easier to go to the cafe next door. Oh well what do you want for $50 a nite!
Room small and clean.
