“A Great Place To Stay”
Reviewed June 8, 2009

This well located comfortable hotel was a great place to stay. We booked a room with balcony facing the canal and were not disappointed. The staff at the front desk was most helpful getting us internet access at the public computer as well as recommending a close by restaurant with delicious food for dinner. We enjoyed the more than adequate buffet breakfast set out in the clean dining room on the hotel's first floor.

We arrived at the Hotel American through booking with Austrian Airlines Vacations, which has not steered us wrong yet. We stayed six nights and it was heaven.

Upon arrival, we were greeted with a friendly "Buena Sera" by Elizabetha at the front desk. Beppi helped us with our luggage and we proceeded to room 210. We recommend this room as it has a balcony overlooking the canal Rio Vio. The double bed was comfortable and the room was large.

The location was perfect. Literally a 2 minute walk from the Zattere Vaparetto stop off the Alilaguna airport boat line and in the other direction, a 3 minute walk to the Academia bridge and number 1 Vaparetto stop. While convenient, there were not a lot of the hordes of tourists walking in the area. As the hotel is set back in the middle of the block, the people traveling from the Academia to the Peggy Guggenheim museum ( a 7 minute walk or so from the hotel) weren't walking in front of the hotel.

At night, you can hear the water flowing up against the walls of the canal. It is so quiet and you don't hear the other guests.

On the second to last night of our vacation, my husband hurt his back. The staff was so accommodating and we were so touched by their genuine caring and empathy. From the front desk (Elizabetha, Marco and Ronald) to the bellmen (Beppi and Paulo) my husband was taken care of. They offered to help and went above and beyond what most hotel staffers would do. We can't thank them enough!!!

The staff also recommended that to go to the restaurant next door, Cantinone Storico. One of the best restaurants we have eaten at in the world! The gnocchi was superb and homemade! The owner was so friendy (ask about his paintings on the restaurant's wall). It was so good we went back for lunch later in the week. We sat outside next to the canal and it was so relaxing. Just what we needed. Ronald also recommended we eat at Taverna San Trovaso, a 4 minute walk from the hotel. Another fabulous meal. We also discovered a great find in the Cannaregio section. Ristorante Al Vagon. Just footsteps off the main route, the food was homemade and truly tasty. We recommend the homemade lasagna.

Don't let the name throw you. The Hotel American is truly a Venetian home away from home.

Bit late for this review, having stayed there last year but may well visit again end of July this year-2009.Better than other Hotels I have Stayed in,in Venice in a far Higher Price Bracket.
Good Roomy Air Conditioned Hotel with Lovely Views from its Balconies, and a couple of minutes from the beautiful Zattere.
Friendly efficient Staff and Reception including a good daily breakfast.
Rooms,Bathrooms,General areas Very Clean and Room Prices Spot on.
Even Better 2 Seconds, from my favourite Restaurant-just come outside and look to your right.
Looking forward to another trip in the next few weeks and Hotel American Dinesen
is top of my list.

We stayed in the American Dinesen hotel on the recommendation of family members who had stayed there twice before. The hotel is in a lovely location very close to the Academia Bridge. The staff were wonderful and friendly - nothing was too much trouble for them. The room we had, 104, was extremely comfortable. Large bed, sky tv, and wonderful bathroom with bath & shower. Make sure you close the wooden shutters outside the room at night! A nice variety of continental breakfast choices was provided every morning. The little terrace on the first floor of the hotel was a lovely relaxing spot to sit out on.

My husband and I spent 2 weeks at the American Dinesen. The hotel is located close the Accademia Gallery, the bridge and vaporetto stop, and the Peggy Guggenhein Collection. Despite the name, it is very Venitian, with a delightful staff who are multilingual.

The hotel is well kept, very clean and quiet. Our room was tastefully decorated, not overdone, and had a lovely modern bathroom. The breakfast buffet is more than satisfying, providing meats and cheeses along with croissants and other breads. The Cappuccino and Hot chocolate are fabulous. A nice touch was the rose every woman received on St. Mark's Day.

There is a very nice restaurant next door and the Zattere is nearby for great strolls in the evening . . . and gelato.

We arrived in the early hours of the morning with a small baby but we needn't have worried as the hotel is only a 5 minute walk form the Academia Bridge and a young man was very helpful in pointing the hotel out to us. The bus from the airport is very easy and drops near the Grand Canal. The hotel is 15 mins beautiful stroll to St Marco and 2 minutes along the small canal to the promenade on the other side of Dorsoduro, looking over to Guidecca. The hotel staff are very welcoming and helpful, bringing a lovely breakfast up to the room when my daughter was unwell. The room was plenty large enough for the cot and 2 single beds and in lovely old Venetian style. Will certainly return to this hotel with my husband.

Reviewed April 13, 2009

We stayed here once before in 2004, and decided to return this year for a week.

Scanning through past reviews, most of what I'd say has been said, but I notice one of the more negative reviews was specifically about the room we stayed in (room 102) where they complained about the lack of curtains and light and noise from outside. I can only guess that they were not aware of the wooden shutters that you close OUTSIDE the window. Room 102 (and presumably the ones aboce) is particularly wonderful in that it has three balcony windows, but it does require that you close the shutters when you have the lights on at night, and either close the window or be careful with the nets to ensure that you don't allow mosquitos in at any point in the day. A little bit of insect repelant WHEREVER you stay in Venice at almost any time of year would probably be sensible too these days. I suggest a grand canal view is NOT desirable - it's like asking for a view of the busiest road in town. It is beautiful, but you should be going out to see it and the rest of venice!

Quick list of good things:
-confortable and very clean room, proper bathroom
-non-intrusive maids
-BBC news on the TVs in rooms!
-nice breakfast (enough to get you through to dinner with only a light lunch stop)
-super nice lady serving coffee at breakfast
-friendly (if slightly random) staff
-in a relatively quiet part of Venice
-15 mins walk to St. Marks (or more direct if you take the traghetto)
-5 mins to bank machine and academia water bus stop
-0 mins to superb restaurant (Cantinone Storico)
-a few mins to lots of good restaurants
-15 mins to a supermarket (ask at front desk where Billa is)
-they didn't eject my personal stash of food/drink from the minibar
-free wifi (but see below)
-public PC available

Slightly negative things:
-windows, nets and shutters required some thought to make sure temperature, noise and light were right
-bathroom got very hot, couldn't see how to avoid that

And this is what bugged me:
-the wifi was a bit fiddly: it was done by web interface with an individual username and password which you need to ask for and sign for at reception. Everytime you use your laptop, you need to put in the unmemorable username and password. And there was something wrong with how it was set up (there were multiple access points but all set to the same channel, and sometimes the connection dropped for no obvious reason, bandwidth not good).

I can see why the hotel wasn't using a single standard password for everyone (even while I was there others who weren't staying at the hotel came to ask for the password), but wouldn't it be possible just to have a normal WEP/WPA network and change the details from time to time? The web interface made it unusuable on my iphone and ipod touch. I do hope the change their system before our next visit!!!

Everything else was so good, even the wifi annoyance doesn't reduce this from a 5/5 from me.

Dear Sir,Madame
we are happy to hear that you had, again,a pleasant stay in our Hotel and that our staff and facilities lived up to your expectations. As you reported we provide free wifi internet access in the entire building, including our guestrooms, "unfortunately" the italian law against terrorism require us to register the details of any user (only our guests can use our internet access, peolple not accomodated in our Hotel cannot use it ) including the date, time of connection, details about the webnavigation, that's why we have to provide a different account, asking each guest to sign it and that's why we have to make a copy of the passport . Unfortunately we cannot use only one password WEP/WPA, it would be much better for us but this is not allowed by the italian law. Seems strange that you were not able to use your iphone or ipod to access the web as a lot of guests did that without any problem.
Thank you fo your preference and for giving us a 5/5. We do hope to welcome you back in our Hotel in the next future, we remain at your disposal

Kind Regards
Alberto Sutera
