“Suffering a little from "too big to fail" syndrome.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 17, 2010

The Westin Hotel Europa & Regina, as far as large commercial hotel experiences go, is not that unpleasant, although with so many guests thanks to it's connection with the Starwood Hotels & Resorts group, it suffers from never quite being able to deliver an amazing experience.

PRO:

1. Hard working and polite staff - which is hard considering their international guests expect a "global hospitality" service. They are competent and able to deliver on reasonable requests.

2. They're willing and able to upgrade Starwood members to nicer rooms - friendliness goes a long way.

3. The rooms, at least the three I was in, were decent sized, mostly clean and above average for Venice.

4. Location is either good or bad depending on your belief that San Marco is the only thing worth seeing in Venice.

5. Very accommodating kitchen - we spoke with the restaurant manager and asked for a special dinner for my very pregnant wife and they very much delivered.

CON:

1. Very overpriced food and drinks - even by Venice standards. Quality is above average but this is what I would consider gouging.

2. Room cleaning and maintenance were below average, even by commercial hotel standards in Venice.

3. Too many giant tour groups and "I think I'm privileged" guests on expense accounts to make it a special property - instead of a "could be a fancy hotel anywhere from the inside" experience.

4. Poor signage when arriving on foot - although this is certainly not uncommon for Venice - would not hurt them to put up a few signs. I happen to know Venice very well but most people will have a hard time finding it.

5. Even though the trend is to charge people a lot of money for wifi, Westin/Starwood could set the standard and reverse this most disturbing effort by offering free internet to all guests.

Overall, a good, if mostly average experience if you're staying on your Starwood points. The location and services make Venice easier and the view of the Punta Della Dogana and Santa Maria della Salute are wonderful.

The hotel has a wonderful location is you want to be on the Grand Canal & walking distance to St. Mark’s square but that’s about it.

Our room did have a partial view of a central courtyard above kitchens or something of the sort and the adjoining buildings walls which we enjoyed very much. Its size was that of a shoebox with big chunky furniture, not the place if you are claustrophobic as ceilings and extra low. You hardly had enough space to move around the bed and I had to store the spare blanket & our travel bags under the bed in order to hang our clothes in the closet. Do note we were only there for a week-end so it’s not like I packed my wardrobe.
Some reviews mention a bottle of water, candy or slippers, lucky them! We did not receive any of these and turndown was inexistent.
It was all rather very disappointing to not a pleasant experience. The only aspect of a 5 star hotel being its rates.
Definitely not Starwood quality. As Gold Preferred members, I had asked for an upgrade when making the reservation, cannot imagine the room we would have had being regular customers. We hardly saw any staff beside at check-in and check-out, which took forever. They are totally disorganized and do not expect them to get your bags in a reasonable amount of time. We actually after a long wait brought them down to the lobby ourselves. They then were taken by staff and stacked on a huge pile of more waiting luggage unattended while you wait to that someone feels like making the effort to get you a boat the leave this enchanting place!

Cannot comment on the food beside the Breakfast buffet was lousy and cold, certainly not a 5 star quality or service, which discouraged us from having any other meals at the hotel.
The only highlight of our Venetian holiday was our lunches at the “Buon Ricordo”.

Thank you so much for a perfect stay in Venice. Looking at the location of other 5 star hotels, I feel the Europa has the prime location in Venice on the Grand Canale with the Santa Maria della Salute Basilica and Punta della Dogana da Mar directly opposite, plus the Chiesa San Giorgio Maggiore on the island of island of San Giorgio Maggiore in the distance towards the Lagoon. May be this is why Anthony Mingella chose the Hotel as one of the locations in his film The Talented Mr Ripley and Monet chose to paint one of his pieces of the Grand Canale. Our room was extremely spacious and very comfortable and gave us spectacular views of the above both during the day and at night when these sites were floodlit --- perfect !!!

The staff of the hotel were very friendly and attentive to every detail. The concierge staff of Ilario, Roberto, Alberto and Marco were all extremely helpful and I was made to feel that any request was no problem whatsoever.

The buffet breakfast was the perfect start for the day with hot chocolate just how I like it and a unhindered view of the Grand Canale across to Dorsoduro Sestiere. I just hope I don’t become addicted to spumante in the mornings.

I’d like to thank the Westin for such a memorable stay and I will endeavour to make my next visit to Venice very soon and it goes without saying I will chose and recommend the Hotel Westin Europa and Regina every time !!!

This hotel is conveniently located near Piazza San Marco, The room we stayed in was very clean, well-furnished, with a very comfortable bed. It wasn't very large but wasn't cramped either. The bathroom was quite nice, very spacious. Service was very good, as I would expect from a Westin -- it was courteous and efficient, but I wouldn't consider it warm. The hotel has a dock at the Canal Grande, from which you can take water taxis (which are very expensive) or the hotel's free shuttle to/from Lido island (we used the shuttle for a pleasant visit to Lido). The hotel is close to two vaporetto (water bus) stops, which we used frequently to visit parts of the city that were not within walking distance. We paid for our stay with Starwood points -- a great deal. Cash rates are quite high, though probably in line with other luxury hotels in Venice. Our comfortable stay in this hotel greatly enhanced our enjoyment of the city. I highly recommend this hotel.

This hotel has a wonderful location which is right on the Grand Canal. Our room did have a partial view which we enjoyed very much. The room itself was large but pretty shabby. There were dents in the furniture, one of the drapes was hanging off of broken hooks, the bench was missing one of the decorative knobs and there was just one miserable chair. The small single bottle of water labelled with "our compliments" was a joke. Later in the week a box of candy did show up and a cheap bottle of Bellini. The turndown consisted of closing the drapes and tossing a pair of slippers in a plastic bag on the side of the bed. The staff couldn't have been less friendly. We stopped saying Buon Giorno in the mornings since we either got no response or a half-hearted one. Particular note to the congierge staff. You could stand in front of the desk for quite awhile before they would acknowledge you. We have stayed at the Danieli which is a marked contrast to this Westin property. We won't be back, we would have complained at the Starwood desk if anyone had ever been there.

Although challenging to find, the hunt is worth it as the Westin is located directly on the Grande Canal in near proximity to San Marco Square. Spacious rooms and bathrooms with vaulted ceilings and wonderful bathroom amenities. Room service was delivered on time and great food, the dining room breakfast buffet even better. The concierge was was very helpful as were the rest of the staff. A wonderful experience.

My wife and I stayed 4 nights at the Westin Europa and Regina.
As a president of a software company, I travel extensively.
This was the best stay of any hotel that I have ever experienced.
The staff made me feel special, especially the room maid and the lounge bartender.
The room was magnificent with a view from the 6th floor overlooking Venice.
I highly recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Venice.
