“Priceless Views From The Terrace”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 8, 2012

My wife and I spent several delightful hours on the terrace (waterside) of the Hotel Monaco & Grand Canal on September 29, 2012, while on an extended visit to Venice. We both have visited the knock-off found in Las Vegas and thought that it would be interesting to compare, if possible, the view experiences with both locations. The real thing is much more interesting, of course, but to compare the experience is impossible. The real Hotel Monaco in Venice offers panoramic views just feet away of gondolas, vaporettos and many boats passing in the canal from speeding water taxis to large cruise ships. Just delightful!

Service on the terrace is very expensive and service seemed to us to be slow. However, the view is great and the experience is priceless! It was worth the €74.50 for the pasta and glasses of wine while snacking at the real deal, the Hotel Monaco on the Grand Canal in Venezia!

We stayed here as part of an Orient Express holiday. The hotel is next to the vaporetto stop and close to the Piazza San Marco. The dining room and waterfront terrace have stunning views of the Grand Canal and Baccino, with the Salute dazzling across the canal. The food breakfast was fairly typical (rolls & coffee or hot chocolate) and dinner was excellent. The hotel has an air of opulence.

Stayed here for a week in September. The hotel location is fantastic. The views from the restaurant terrace are some of the best in Venice, always busy due to the Gondoler and waterbus traffic.
The food in the restaurant was superb and the waiters were very attentive. I have read reviews about the staff being unhelpful / unfriendly. I did not find that.
The concierge was very helpful and informative, always ensuring that the level of service was excellent.
The buffet breakfast was good, not as good as the Molino Stucky, but the location of this hotel made up for that.
On the down side, hotel guests are charged a cover charge when eating in the restaurant, first time I have seen that one!

I actually book into plaza selvaggio but was upgraded to this hotel.I could not be happier since this hotel is right on the canal.Taking your meals at the restaurant whilst watching the traffic on the canal is quite a treat.Whilst I was not too impressed by the service -Staff are not very friendly and appear to be quite stressed and borderline annoyed-the restaurant is excellent.I tried to get dinner at 9 but everything was either closed or closing, so went back to the hotel to an opened restaurant.Despite having no reservation, they did accommodate me.I had the best pasta meal ever -linguini with lobster and mushroom. I would definitely go back to the restaurant. As for the hotel, I paid the price for plaza selvaggio, the actual price for Grand Monaco appears to be very expensive. However the location is excellent - right on plaza di Marco and the vaporetto stops.Ifyou can afford it, then it is definitely recommended.

DearSteffimad,

Let me thank you for choosing our Hotel Palazzo Selvadego for your stay in Venice and for sharing your experience. I am glad that you have enjoyed the change to our Hotel Monaco & Grand Canal but I'm sorry you did not appreciate our staff, I can assure you that every effort is aimed at the satisfaction of our customers.
Thank you also for highlighting our a la’ carte Restaurant “Grand Canal” with alfresco terrace overlooking the Grand Canal and the basin of St. Mark's with the Dogana Tip, the Island of San Giorgio, the Salute Church and the Redentore. We are open every day of the year from 8:00 A.M. to 10:30 P.M. and in any time of the day you can choose from our different Menu’s, dishes made with the finest local and seasonal ingredients. The Venetians choose our Restaurant for the good food and for the magic of the setting. Therefore we always recommend a table reservation.
I hope to have the pleasure to welcome you again on your next trip to Italy to share another experience.

Kindest regards,

Gabriele Marchiori, General Manager

Situated on the Grand Canal and next to a gondola and taxi station this hotel is great for getting about in Venice. The food is quite expensive and the rooms not huge but we werent there to see the inside of a hotel room or eat gourmet meals. The staff were adequate but could have been nicer as it was a 4 star hotel. The only down side was an issue with birds jumping onto the tables looking for food which the staff seemed to think was ok!!!!!

Room Tip: You can pay silly money for a room at the front of the hotel - dont - instead get a table on the wat...

My wife and I stayed 2 nights in this hotel in September prior to boarding our cruise ship. The room was well appointed and spotless but lacked natural light and looked out on to a nearby bare wall, the result being that the room electric lights had to be on during the day to allow one to read or operate normally. The breakfasts were of below average quality with little service in attendance. If you wished to eat on the veranda facing the Grand Canal there was an additional $30 charge levied. The public rooms of the hotel are magnificient and the reception staff pleasant and helpful.
The hotel is ideally situated adjacent to The Grand Canal & St Marks Square from where the sights of Venice are readily accessible. I believe that "rooms with a view" are available at premium prices, so check out the options before you book.

Room Tip: Rooms facing outward should be enquired after regarding availability and price

Dear Mr. Ferndown,

Thank you for your comments about your stay at the Hotel Monaco & Grand Canal.
This makes us always improve in hosting our most valuable clients.
Please let us underline that natural light indoor in Venice is very hard to have unless you do not have windows facing an open space.

Unfortunately this is one of the defects of the city of Venice.

As far as your comments on breakfast are concerned, we will surely consider a more present attendance during breakfast time and also please note that absolutely no additional charge is requested for breakfast on the Terrace. You probably had a reservation for room only and the Euro 35.oo is for breakfast charge but not for having it on the Terrace, also please note that in the future, if you wish to book with us again you can "reserve" your breakfast on our website at a special price. (ad long as this offer will be available)

We are sorry the above has spoiled your stay at the Monaco & Grand Canal, we always try to render our Guests' stay as memorable and pleasant as possible in order to have them back with us and host them again at the Monaco & Grand Canal

This is what my husband and I were told when we discovered that the Grand Canal room we booked was not what we received! Our complaints were met with "you are dead to me" stares. This hotel needs a serious lesson in customer service. We asked for a dinner reservation and the Concierge "forgot" to make it. The Concierge on duty when we checked to see about the reservation simply said, "if I could not tell him the name of the restaurant he couldn't help me!" We heard similiar stories in the lobby from other tourists. Our suggestion is to stay some place else...any place else! By the way, breakfast is 39 Euros!

Room Tip: Book a different hotel!!!
