As soon as you walk into the Bauer lobby you feel like you are at an upscale hotel. The staff are all nice and seem happy to be working there. The concierge was so nice, funny and helpful. The breakfast buffet was by far the best of the 3 hotels we visited in Italy. The rooms are small. Our room opened to a canal that had gondola's going by all the time, but when the windows were closed, you could not hear them.

We arrived in style at the Bauer Il Palazzo on 7th April 2011. We caught a private water taxi from the airport which took about 40 minutes and cost 100 euro. When we arrived at the hotel we were greated by Paulo and his team, they took our luggage off the boat and straight up to our room, whilst we were offered a glass of water and somewhere to rest whilst they organised the room key for us. The room (746) was on the 7th floor and had a lovely large terrace which views over the Grand Canal and the busy street behind the hotel with all the lovely designer shops on. The room it self was a little tired but I think Venetian style in general is! The bathroom was lovely, all marble with a seperate shower and bath and nice big mirrors, essential for a lady!! My only fault about this hotel is some of the staff just did not seem to care. On the day we arrived I wanted to have a glass of Prosecco sitting next to the Grand Canal. We sat and waited to be served, only after my boyfriend asked 3 times could someone take our order did we eventaully get a drink. The De Pisis restaurant is also extremely expensive and neither I or my bf enjoyed our meals. I actaully could not eat mine it was so bad. When the waiter came to take my plate away (still full) he did not ask why I hadn't eaten my meal. They did however, not charge for any of our drinks, so maybe this was the reason. The concierge and all the team on reception including Paulo could not do enough for you and if you are going to stay in Venice for the first time as pricey as the Palazzo is I think it's a must to stay here or Gritti Palace or Westin Regina. I didn't like the look of the Danieli or any of the other hotels further on from St Marks Square (far too busy an area to stay in). Our hotel room was lovely and quiet if a bit of a treck to get to. The hotel is split into 2 defenately different bits. The Baher urban, is very chic and Art Deco and the Il Palazzo is old and true Venetian style. We went to the Cipriani Hotel for lunch over on Guidecca Island, what an amazing hotel and an amazing spot.

Room Tip: Wear flat shoes if on 7th floor!!!

Location is perfect. There is no better location. This hotel is bit confusing. Their is actually 2 hotels attached. The Bauer is newer and more modern. The Il Palazzo is being renovated, but some of the rooms are very old and need some updating.
The staff is very nice and knowledagable.
The longer you stay the more it grows on you.
Just be very specific about your room catagory and room type and confirm what the view is going to be.
It is typical Venitian, but be sure to ask questions. The staff does try very hard to accomodate,

This hotel was a huge disappointment. We thought during our Italian Honeymoon would spoil our selves with at least one 5 star Hotel and we were very upset with our choice. We paid a huge price for a standard room, a room with some lights that didnt work and very minimal lighting for the ones that did work which made it really hard to see what you were doing at times. The carpet was old, very poor paint restorations in alot of parts of the room as well as a rock hard bed with rock hard pillows. The windows were ultra thin which made it hard to sleep with all the outside noise at night. The breakfast was very poor, our 3 star hotel in Rome had a much better breakfast with heaps more variety. At this hotel, if you didnt make it to breakfast by 8am you were not left with much to choose from. The service was not 5 star standard how ever it was not the worst. Finally, the hotel does not give you swipe cards to get in your room, its the old fashioned key which gets very annoying to carry around and making sure its not lost. I will definately say that we will NEVER stay here again. On a better note, Venice is stunning and we look forward to returning hopefully with better accomodation.
