Owner description: Originally built in the mid-13th century, Santa Maria Glorisoa dei Frari (St. Mary of the Friars) houses many masterpieces of Venetian Renaissance art, notably Giovanni Bellini's triptych "Madonna and Child with Saints," the "Assumption" and the "Pesaro Madonna" by Titian, Saint John the Baptist by Donatello.

The Frari church is one of my favourite churches/places to visit while I'm in Venice. The Titian against the altar is one of Venice's most famous works of art. But I am always stunned by the gorgeous tomb of Canova, Venice's famed sculptor.
Be sure to do some reading before or while you're there to understand the significance of some of the tombs, paintings and relics.

An absolute must !!!!!!!! From the outside this minor basilica is quite plain in Italian standards. However the interior will blow you away. The is a tomb held high by four huge moors, and on the high altar the exquisite painting by Titian of the Assumption which was painted in situ.

This is one of the very few must sees in Venice. There is of course masses to see in Venice - it takes weeks to see it all and I have taken weeks to do so. But this is a MUST SEE. The history of reredos art is told here in its wonderful paintings. The Titian Assumption of the Virgin in her red gown hits you as you walk in - painted when he was 21! But the hauntingly beautiful Bellini Triptic in the side chapel (don't be put off by the reliquaries) is an early example of 3d art. Look for the altar on the side of the nave, also by Titian, it is very unusual and lovely. Finally, pay homage to the Father of Opera, Monteverdi, whose grave lies in one of the side chapel and is easy to miss.
