Owner description: Originally built in the mid-13th century, Santa Maria Glorisoa dei Frari (St. Mary of the Friars) houses many masterpieces of Venetian Renaissance art, notably Giovanni Bellini's triptych "Madonna and Child with Saints," the "Assumption" and the "Pesaro Madonna" by Titian, Saint John the Baptist by Donatello.

St. Mark's is more famous. But for beauty and inspiration, see this church. The art is stunning. And it is simple, in the Franciscan tradition. The simplicity will make the beauty and value of this church jump out. Enjoy!

Pictures are NOT allowed (sadly) because it is a discovery to have found this church. The true treasure is close to the altar where you can spend quite a while mesmerised at the ceiling and altar that tell stories of centuries past. The tombs are what you expect from a church wuth so much history, The only disappointment was having to pay for a ticket when, if asked you would gladly leave a small donation for the visit.

Beautifull and nice church to visit, no entrance fee, next to a waterbus stop so easy to do, nice surrounding.

. . the first time we went and no less so, the second and third times ( on different holidays ).
The sheer scale, combined with the artistry just leaves you feeling very humble. If you feel a tear in your eye, don't be embarrassed, you won't be the only one.

After every visit, once you are home, you'll look it up on the internet or at your local library; you'll want to know more . . and more.

Fairly unassuming on the outside, but inside is a delight. The artwork is exquisite, especially the drapery carved on the statues of Canova's tomb. We arrived not long before it shut and the woman on the entrance was packing up and just let everyone in for free.
