Owner description: A masterpiece of Gothic architecture, the building and its sculptural decoration date from various periods. The interior, with works by artists such as Titian, Veronese, Tintoretto, A.Vittoria and Tiepolo, includes vast council chambers, superbly decorated residential apartments, and austere prison cells. Along the facades of the Palace run loggias that overlook St. Mark’s Square and the lagoon. The combined entrance ticket to the St. Mark’s Square Museums grants access to the Doge’s Palace, Museo Correr, Museo Archeologico Nazionale and Monumental Rooms of Biblioteca Marciana.

This is one of the brilliant attractions of St Mark's, despite the queues. The first time I have ever had to queue to use the men's loo.

I am not a Museum addict but this is a must. The palace, courts, prison and government houses are all under one roof. A great way of understanding the Venetian empire. I was so impressed, I even bought the book! The cost was well worth the expense. The time spent there made the rest of Venice, and the region, far more profound.

We loved the Doges Palace, but recommend you book a tour so you understand the amazing history of the place. The building is where the government of the time ruled and where political prisoners were housed, so the building provided both the stark prison cells to beautifully decorated and ornate government rooms with rich vibrant paintings. Casanova was imprisoned there for nearly 2 years. We were fortunate to do the Dark Rome secret tour which has access to behind the scenes areas not open to the general public, so we saw the torture room, Casanova's cell, secret doors and passages, etc.

Tintoretto and Titian make the Sistine chapel look tired and ordinary. The Doge's Palace is simply awesome. One of the best things yuo will ever see.
