“No waiting in lin”

We were very much surprised that we didn't have to line up to enter the Basilica. We went late afternoon which I think helped. Beautiful basilica and a "must" to visit whilst in Venice

“Mosaics are Incredible”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 16, 2013

Crowds moved quickly and were not huge in late October. Take time to see the incredible mosaics and to appreciate the grandeur and history of the basilica.

“You simply cannot miss this one!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 16, 2013

Luckily we chose a time when the queues to visit were very small and this was certainly a good move. There is so much to see and wonder at that if you were being herded around it would have been very difficult to have made return visits to see something you had bound to have missed. And we did plenty of that! Just visit it!

“Well worth the wait and fighting the crowds”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 14, 2013

The crowds in the Piazza San Marco are as bad as the holiday crowds in Disneyworld or the Christmas tree in Rockefeller plaza. BUT the beauty of the exterior façade and the artwork inside are well worth the wait. There is no charge to get into the Basilica, but there are several sections that do cost a minimal fee. We had been told by "insiders", to pay the 5 Euros at the entrance and go straight up the steps to the Basilica Museum before entering the Basilica with the crowd. This was excellent advice. The steps are quite steep, but not too long, and we had an unobstructed view of the entire Basilica from the balcony that was incredible. You can stand in the balcony and take your time looking at the interior of the Basilica without the jostling crowds and tours. The Museum also allows access to the loggia that surrounds the exterior of the Basilica. From the loggia, you can look out over the Piazza and also get a great close-up view of the famous clock tower. Finally, the museum holds many examples of mosaics and art work from the Basilica. Finally, the museum has the original bronze horses that were on the front façade. They had been badly damaged by the weather and have been replaced with copies to preserve them from further damage. Down on the main floor of the Basilica, the crowds and tours make it difficult to take in all the splendid décor. I wish I had prepared better before we visited, so that I could focus better on specific pieces, and was not so overwhelmed by the wonderful architecture, mosaics on the floors and the walls, murals and altar pieces. The management has done a great job of allowing the public to experience the wonder of the building, while retaining the respectful and religious tone of a church.

“A church worth viewing”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 13, 2013

Sometimes it seems Europe is all about churches. As that goes, this is a good one. Wonderful frescos, imaginative statues, lots of gold and embossing.
Watch your footing, the floors in this old church are shifting and you may actually stumble if you don't look down now and then.
