Owner description: Blending the architectural styles of East and West, Venice's magnificent basilica was consecrated in 832 AD as an ecclesiastical building to house the remains of St. Mark.

Well worth getting a skip the line tour for this! Horrendously crowded unfortunately. But not much choice there I suppose. Having a guide point out the intricacies and tell stories of the basilica and its history/art work was invaluable. Highly recommended, don't miss it!

This is probably the most beautiful and interesting church in Europe. It is interesting because is in fact an Orthodox church by architecture and you don't see that in Catholic countries. Then it is decorated opulently with gold and countles statues, mosaics and sculptures looted from the former capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, Constantinopole. Pay the EUR 10/person to see the Treasure, Pala D'Oro and the Museum because you will see things unique in the world. In the Treasure they have the largest collection of relics of saints (the skull of John the Baptist, leg bones from St. George, the body of St Mark, blood drops of Jesus and many more) plus wooden chip and nails from the Holy Cross. Strangely enough, these treasures are not advertised and neither labeled, we found about them in a specialised travel guide on Venice. Probably, it is intended to keep a low profile on them considering the claims of the Orthodox Church.
End your tour on the terrace of the Museum with a panoramic view over Piazza San Marco, said to be the most beautiful in the world. Up there, notice the cuts around the necks of the quadriga horses mentioned in Dan Brown's latest novel Inferno.

I've seen the Basilica 2 times before but never with the lights on. Wow, what a difference. It's amazingly beautiful with all the Morano glass tile fresco'd ceilings. It's too beautiful to describe, you just have to see it. I would take a guided tour of it just so you can bypass the very long lines to get in to see it.

the building is impressing from outside. but much more, though differently, from inside.
never seen and surely unique are the mosaics and the extensive use of gold layers.
the inside architecture and paintings.
I had not the mood of a typical christian church but of an eternal building.

The line getting into Saint Mark's was very long but moved quickly and was well worth the time spent. There is no initial entrance fee. Once you get in there are 3 different places you can enter with a fee. Even if you opt not to pay the fees, it is worth spending the time to get inside.
