The splendour of Saint Mark's is something that cannot fail to inspire awe. Both inside and out the sheer majesty of the building is unrivalled and in a city of stunningly beautiful churches, the basilica sets the highest standard. The marble facade is imposing yet delicately beautiful and the golden mosaic interior is unrivalled in the greatest churches and cathedrals across Europe. As a visitor experience it was excellent: no queues, no entrance charge and plenty of room to soak up the atmosphere. We paid small charges to visit the Treasury and the stunning golden alter screen, both of which were well worth paying for, especially given that there was no entrance charge. An absolute 'must see' for visitors to Venice.

No trip to Venice is complete without a visit to St Marks Basilica. We were filled with wonder and awe at the decorative artwork which adorns so much of the fabric of this interesting building. Visitors were sufficiently respectful for us to be able to enjoy both the surrounds and the spiritual depth which felt very tangible. A 'must visit' for those with and without a faith.

It is a stunning building, and its free to go inside. Once inside, there are many ropes and you have to pay small sums to see anything other than the main areas. In retrospect, I probably should have paid the 2 Euro. I didn't and walked through quite quickly. I spent more time walking around looking at the building from outside. Was not particularly crowded when I went, but it was January and the weather was chilly and wet.

Loved the gold detailing and the workmanship of the different altars and the inside of the domes. A welcome break from the large crowds in the square.
