This basilica is really a must-see! I've been to many churches, basilicas and cathedrals all over Europe but this is very very different to any others. It has a really imposing interior architecture with lots of areas hidden away in the dark. It was very very busy and we had to queue for a while to get in but it was worth it.

Unfortunately many tourists ignored the 'no photograph' and 'quiet please' signs which was a bit annoying inside, but I still managed to have a moment of quiet in this magnificent building.

The exterior of this church is magnificent. Its faced is ornate and the Byzantine architecture is unique. The interior mosaics are fantastic!

“See the mosaics lit up”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 30, 2013

Our family enjoyed visiting this impressive church. We booked a ticket at www.venetoinside.com for only 1 euro. You can do this up to 10 minutes before entry but must be able to print out the tickets. This allowed us to avoid the line-up on a hot August day and book an entrance time when the mosaics are usually lit up (between 11:30-12:30 weekdays). We were lucky and the lights were on – it made the church sparkle and allowed for much better viewing of the gold mosaic ceiling. We paid the 2 euro to view the Pala d’Oro, the jewel laden altar table, which was not really worth it to me. However, the 4 euro to visit the museum and climb to the outdoor balcony was very worthwhile. The views of the plaza and lagoon from here are terrific.

“A unique building”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 29, 2013

The was the last of the major churches we visited on our 12 day Italian trip. I was not as impressed with it as with some of the others. There was construction/renovation going on inside and out. There were some very beautiful features, but I didn't feel the grace and peace here that I felt at others.
