Great Basilica. Entrance is free, but you are charged if you want to see special area.

The mosaic friezes are amazing and the tiles/mosaics on the floors are fabulous.

Basilica di San Marco is a gem. The entire interior is spectacular, but pay particular attention to the remarkable marble floors. They're gorgeous!!

Although the line might seem long, we were in within 20 minutes. Remember to drop off your bag at the free place behind the Basilica. Instead of taking a tour, we used Rick Steves audio tour available for free on iTunes (podcast).

The Basilica itself is absolutely gorgeous with its golden ceilings and mosaics all over. It is worth paying a little extra money to visit the golden plaque (can't remember the exact name) and the museum upstairs where you can have a beautiful view of Piazza San Marco.

but if you've already been to several hundred European churches, don't waste your time going in this one. It felt like humanity's end inside. First, huge crowds everywhere, but the line moved quick (security only). Once inside, you follow a path with all the rest of the cows. Moo! No photo signs everywhere, but that didn't stop anybody - so either allow photography or enforce the rule. Folks with integrity shouldn't be punished. You can't see much of anything once inside unless you pay - this includes the altar itself. We were in there for 10 minutes, couldn't wait to leave. The best part of the church is the outside. Maybe the inside is spectacular to those that never seen a church, but I've been to so many that I find this place completely skippable.
