Owner description: The tallest spiral staircase of Venice is a perfect synthesis of different styles (Renaissance, Gothic and Venetian-Byzantine). It was commissioned by Pietro Contarini in late 1400 as a decorative element of the adjacent family's Palazzo. Even today there are several hypotheses about the authorship of the manufacturer. The monument can be considered a unique architectural jewel in the lagoon, the new Renaissance expression that was establishing in the city. The Scala is connected to the palace by three floors lodges. To the top there is the Belvedere with a wonderful view of Venice. From here you can see the domes and the Campanile di San Marco, the Basilica of Santi Giovanni e Paolo, and even the Teatro la Fenice.

In most other places I would agree with the "extraordinary" assessment, but by Venetian standards it is "just okay." The point is that in Venice there are thousands of incredible buildings and architectural wonders. Thus, as amazing as this structure is, based on the fact it is a little hard to find and fenced off and down a dead end darkish alley, I would not encourage people with a limited amount of time in the city to spend too much time searching this out when their time could be better spent. In other words, if it happened to be in 99% of the rest of the cities of the world I would feel differently, but relatively speaking in Venice.....

We were on a ghost tour that took us to this building. It was such a cool place that we paid attention so we could find it by ourselves the next day. It is not an easy place to find. I cannot imagine you would stumble upon it while you were wandering around. But it is worth the hunt to find it.

When we visited the whole building was fenced off for rennovation and as such we were unable to go inside - it looks like it's been this way for a while and it doesn't look like itll be open any time soon.

The building is down a narrow little alleyway and a little away from the usual tourist routes and sits in a tiny little square. In its small area of grass there are remnants of columns and the like. It's quite photogenic.

Visually its lovely - lots of arches and the spiral staircase at one edge. Its not lage in comparrison with most other tourist pulls.

If you are in the area it's worth a look - it is certainly an interesting building to look at. If you are on a tight schedule then I wouldn't spend a vast amount of time looking for this gorgeous little building. We saw it at lest twice a day - our small guest house was next door.

I must have walked by this a few times but didnt know it was there because it was just around the corner. Luckily I booked a photo tour with Marco a professional photographer and he took me to a lot of off the beaten track areas to see the real venice and this was one of the places. They had it fenced off so couldnt climb to the top. heard views are great. it is quite impressive.
