Owner description: It is said that Napoleon called San Marco "the drawing room of Europe." And it is a breathtakingly beautiful place. But the square has long been a lure for massive numbers of pigeons, drawn by the massive numbers of tourists who readily feed them. While the tourists happily post for photos amid the flock, there are concerns that the birds' presence--and what they leave behind--will damage the centuries old architecture and art work.

Another must see when in Venice. Large historic square surrounded by fine architecture. You can almost feel the history as well as admire it. During high tides the square and surrounding area will flood, however thanks to raised temporary walk ways you can still move around and enjoy yourselves.

Was quite surprised that the square was as large as it was, I’d seen photo’s of it before but they don’t give you an accurate scale of the size of the square.
Lined by shops and cafes around it’s edges and with the Basilica & Bell Tower at one end which then leads to the Doge’s Palace at the side of the Basilica.
Can get quite busy at times especially around the Basilica and Bell Tower.

Of course St Mark's Square is a must see in Venice, and to be honest, you cannot avoid here - unless you do not plan on doing anything whilst in Venice!

It is a very special square surrounded by some of Venice's main tourist attractions. Standing in the square you get the best photographic opportunity of the Basilica di San Marco - a beautiful building.

St Mark's Square is surrounded by little restaurants and ice-cream shops. There is Italian music to be heard all around.

The Square is full of people as expected, but it is also full of pigeons and sea gulls. If you visit the square in the evening when it is somewhat quieter the ground is practically covered with pigeons. Some locals have food for the pigeons, some of which try to force you to take the food in your hand to feed the pigeons whilst looking for a fee in return. Beware of these!

It is nice to visit the square in the evening and sit on the steps taking in the atmosphere with some ice-cream. It appears that sitting on the steps is frowned upon during the day as workers will ask you not to sit on them.

It is also possible to take a Gondola from the end of the square. These cost €120 for a hour/hour and a half trip along the Venice canals. There was 6 in our group so it only cost €20 each. It is possible to team up with others if they are willing in order to keep the cost of the Gondola's down if there is only a few together.

Definitely recommend visiting St Mark's Square, even if only for a stroll through.

It doesn't disappoint. It's just like the photos, just as large and with all of the beautiful old buildings and restaurants lining the square.
