Review of St. Mark's Square

Owner description: It is said that Napoleon called San Marco "the drawing room of Europe." And it is a breathtakingly beautiful place. But the square has long been a lure for massive numbers of pigeons, drawn by the massive numbers of tourists who readily feed them. While the tourists happily post for photos amid the flock, there are concerns that the birds' presence--and what they leave behind--will damage the centuries old architecture and art work.

It is here to aim if I get into a boat from the Santa Lucia station.
The beginning from spring to the autumn is a best season.
Let's taste genuine Italian food and cappuccino born in this ground by all means.

You have seen it in the movies and on TV and in the magazines and when you get there it is amazing. We went in December no crowds and no smelly canals. Can't reccomend a visit to Venice too highly, lovely city.

Lots of rose vendors handing you a long stem rose and asking you to hold it, then they want money for it.

It was raining one night and it was interesting to see the square pretty much empty.

I was debating whether or not to visit the Doges Palace given our limited time in Venice but boy, this is a must see. I would also thoroughly recommend a guided tour rather than a do-it-yourself. We bought the combined Basilica and Doges Palace tour but this was quite rushed through the Basilica itself given its lengthy queues did not give us time to explore the Basilica on its own as we had to rush off to the tour of the Doges Palace and were not allowed to return to the Basilica once we had left it. However, the tour of the Doges Palace was excellent. This place is fabulous, impressive stairways, sculptures, porticos, panelled and gilded rooms, paintings, you name it. Particular highlights for my sons and I were the cells, the Bridge of Sighs (which you walk across and back), the post boxes (where you could dob in your fellow citizens, but at your peril if it was found to be false), and the massive Sala del Maggior Consiglio (the Hall of the Great Council) with all its decorations, fabulous. Don’t miss it.

Though San Marco was undergoing repairs and there were scaffolding we enjoyed going through San Marco almost every evening. The Doges' Palace is of such wonderful colour by day and also at night and its architecture is unique.
