Owner description: It is said that Napoleon called San Marco "the drawing room of Europe." And it is a breathtakingly beautiful place. But the square has long been a lure for massive numbers of pigeons, drawn by the massive numbers of tourists who readily feed them. While the tourists happily post for photos amid the flock, there are concerns that the birds' presence--and what they leave behind--will damage the centuries old architecture and art work.

Upon entering the square all I could think was Wow! The buildings are huge and where do we start! I suggest you take it slow, stop and look up often. The top of the buildings are magnificent. A great photo stop. I especially liked the frescoes on the dome and bronze horses on the church. Walk to the water and take a gondola ride too.

Honestly, this is not the most beautiful part of Venice. I think the piazza is very much overrated and enjoyed walking through the small streets of canaregio much more. The piazza is too crowded, local restaurants and cafes are overpriced (beware of the music fee). Worth a quick stop but not more than that, take your time in venice to get lost in the small streets around canaregio, visit murano and find better value restaurants and cafe´s off the beaten path using tripadvisor....

St. Mark's Square is beautiful! It is definitely a must see on your trip to Venice. We visited in July 2013. Keep in mind it gets extremely packed during the tourist months...we arrived early before a tour so it was a nice treat to see it without everyone.

Marvelous old world plaza that still gives you the feeling that the heart of the city are the outdoor quads, now and 500 years ago!

We had heard you pay 20euros for a coffee but it's because if you sit down to listen to the lovely music you pay a 6euro charge per person for the musicians, we loved it.
