Owner description: It is said that Napoleon called San Marco "the drawing room of Europe." And it is a breathtakingly beautiful place. But the square has long been a lure for massive numbers of pigeons, drawn by the massive numbers of tourists who readily feed them. While the tourists happily post for photos amid the flock, there are concerns that the birds' presence--and what they leave behind--will damage the centuries old architecture and art work.

Undeniably, the dueling bands in St. Mark's Square is a must do! A bit pricey (six euro cover charge per person, plus the cost of food and beverage) but so wonderful. We sat down, ordered wine and dessert, and watched a 5 piece orchestra entertain us with melodies from The Sound of Music, and many other remarkable pieces. This made for a fine evening. We also enjoyed walking along the water just past the square, and took a tour of St. Mark's church and the Doge's Palace.

We stayed right by the square and enjoyed the ending of the day at the square with two dueling Bands playing music to eat, drink and dance to but the street vendors are in full force at night so be ready to say NO... A LOT. Day time is crowded but interesting with all the tourist walking about and laying in the sun posing with the pigeons and many different shops $ to $$$$.The clock Tower is worth the $ and line you might have to stand in. The views are breath taking! Exciting place to hang out for a few hours for sure.

Best at night when the crowds die down. Enjoying live music and a capuccino or gelato ended our day on a high note.

So, ok, if you visit in the evening and onward into the night, they do want to charge you 6 Euros each just to sit at a cafe table on the square, even if you do decide to splurge for a 28 Euro cup of gelati (the cheapest thing on the menu); but they merely shrugged when, aghast, we politely told the server that we had changed our minds and would not be staying. We got up and wandered about the large square, bombarded with the sights and sounds unique to this place. there were three bands or orchestras every night we were there. Two facing each other from opposite sides of the square, and one just around the bend. When we were tired of being on our feet, we found some space on a ledge or stairs, still in the square, and sat for awhile until we were ready to wander again. It's an odd space, there in the center of the Piazza that houses the Doge's Palace and St. Mark's Cathedral. By day we took the tours. Don't miss them! And at night, EVERY night that were were in Venice, we returned for the experience of the people and the lights and, yes, you can even get affordable gelati (delicious!) if you walk away with it. Just don't sit in any of the cafe chairs :-)

Literally, you MUST see it, if you're in Venice; not only is it worth the time - beautiful and deeply historic - but it's difficult to go very far in Venice without having to cross it. It doesn't take long, and you're at the sight Rick Steves describes as "The Most Romantic Spot on Earth". Day and night are both worth your time.
