Review of St. Mark's Square

Owner description: It is said that Napoleon called San Marco "the drawing room of Europe." And it is a breathtakingly beautiful place. But the square has long been a lure for massive numbers of pigeons, drawn by the massive numbers of tourists who readily feed them. While the tourists happily post for photos amid the flock, there are concerns that the birds' presence--and what they leave behind--will damage the centuries old architecture and art work.

Ah… Venice… A trip to Venice wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the famous St. Mark’s Square. A visit to the Clock tower will set you back 8 Euros p/p but is worth it. Sometimes a big cruise ship will leave Venice and pass St.Mark’s Square. They are HUGE. The square is a nice place to be. Just keep in mind that there are very little seats available and you’re not allowed to sit down on the square. Actually I think it’s forbidden to have a drink there as well (except at the cafes). Public toilets in the area will cost 1,50 Euro (!!). Just so you know.
Other than that, it's a great place to be.

There was a long line, but it moved quickly. It was very warm and I was glad I had my umbrella. The dress code is to have shoulders and knees covered. It seemed that they were more strict about the shoulders than knees. Saw several people in longer shorts.

St. Mark's Square is wonderful, but in the early morning before everyone gets there is the best time to visit. Like 6am is the best. I was there during a very hot time of the year. I have been there during October of the previous year and the weather was much nicer. Summer is just very hot..... But the square itself is very nice, lots of shops. With masks that are made in Venice and hand blown glass shops. It is a sight to see. Do not go to Italy without going to Venice. It is a must.

St. Mark's Square was very nice. We did a walking tour of Venice and ended up in the square. In addition to the architecture, amazingly interesting clock (which we saw chime and change) there were places to eat, drink (fountain to fill water bottles), photographic opportunies, stores and vendors. We felt a little like Mary Poppins as we fed the birds. A gelato here was a must.
