Owner description: It is said that Napoleon called San Marco "the drawing room of Europe." And it is a breathtakingly beautiful place. But the square has long been a lure for massive numbers of pigeons, drawn by the massive numbers of tourists who readily feed them. While the tourists happily post for photos amid the flock, there are concerns that the birds' presence--and what they leave behind--will damage the centuries old architecture and art work.

“Go off season”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2013

Luckily we went off season (February) as I can imagine this is hideously busy in summer - and, very hot. It is worth a visit but very overrated. The cost of a coffee is horrendously expensive - try one of the museum cafes at the end of the square - much cheaper.

“Must see”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 28, 2013

This is the place to be at dawn to watch the sunset and romance the night. Alfresco Dinning is a must and it's everywhere you look, the hardest part is choosing. Then take in a Gondolla ride through the inner city of Venice absolutely Magical. Enjoy and marvel at the sites and sounds of the night in Venice with a nightcap at the Piazza de San Marco.

“Full Marks”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 28, 2013

Seldom does a piazza have so much to offer like St Mark's. The Doges Palace, Basilica and The Campanille can all be observed while standing in the centre. Better still, enjoy the experience sitting at one of the delightful cafes, although they are expensive, you can nurse a drink all day and marvel in the lively atmosphere. Two coffees and a shared sandwich will set you back £30+ euros, so make it last!

“It's magic”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 27, 2013

One of my absolute favorite memories of Venice is walking through Piazza San Marco at night, with lights flickering in the windows of the buildings that line it and a cool breeze blowing in from the canal.

I can't imagine that one would go to Venice without passing through here, but if you're the oddball contemplating such a thing, stop. Make time for this place.

“Come early to avoid the crowd”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 26, 2013

Come early to avoid the crowd at the Piazza San Marco. What else can I say....this famous landmark in Venezia is a place pulsating with tourists. Thousands of tourists visit St. Mark's Square daily. History, art and culture can be found around the buildings in the Square. Fine restaurants line the square. Shops of various kinds and quality abound. Consumers can buy cheap sailor's hat with Venezia on it, masks, jewelries, and souvenirs a plenty.
A tourist visiting Venice for the first time should not miss this historical place. Oh how I wish I could go back to Venice again and experience the energy and beauty that could only be found in St. Mark's Square.
