Owner description: It is said that Napoleon called San Marco "the drawing room of Europe." And it is a breathtakingly beautiful place. But the square has long been a lure for massive numbers of pigeons, drawn by the massive numbers of tourists who readily feed them. While the tourists happily post for photos amid the flock, there are concerns that the birds' presence--and what they leave behind--will damage the centuries old architecture and art work.

“Want to buy a souvenir?”
Reviewed February 11, 2013

A busy square (there are a lot of them in Venice, though this one is HUGE) The tackiness of all the souvenir shops does detract from it's beauty. A great place to chill out if you like to 'people watch'. Lots of tourists... a great place to spend some time... and then go back to your hotel at night away from the tourist areas if you were smart enough to book away from these areas (though still in Venice city though)

“Strolling thriough the drawing room.”
Reviewed February 11, 2013

My wife and I traveled to Venice last July as part of our 3 week vacation in Italy. It is clearly the most colorful of all Italian cities with it's many pastel colors and palaces set along the water's edge. Here all roads lead to the Piazza San Marco. This of course is an amazing architectural achievement that seems to draw all tourists like a magnet when visiting Venice. The Cathedral itself is a Byzantine church put together with the many spoils and riches taken from other countries by Venetian armies over the centuries. The bell tower offers incredible 360 degree views of the city below. At the front of the piazza you'll find two towers welcoming you into the square. And, though expensive, it's still a great place to sit and have a coffee and watch the world go by. Napoleon himself referred to it as "the drawing room of Europe". So, sit back and relax and remember life is good.

“Busy Square”
Reviewed February 11, 2013

This is a must, but go in the evening when less busy. You can then get a table at The Florian easily while listening to the acts on stage in Piazza San Marco.

“Woohoo Carnival!”
Reviewed February 11, 2013

Not only was St Mark's beautiful, but that's where the primary Carnival events were held. Wonderful experience and beautiful architecture.

We had a beautiful time in Venezia. Weather was quite good for february. Coffee wasn´t very good and was expensive-around 6 euro. There are lots of shops and restaurants. Square is large and beautiful!
