Owner description: Venice's main water thoroughfare, lined with great Renaissance palaces, is a colorful and busy spectacle of gondolas and vaporetti.

Bought a vaporetto pass to see the Grand Canal. What a great way to see the sites. We even took it to the island of Murano. The only one that was really crowded was returning from the Rialto Bridge in late afternoon.

The Grand Canal tours give you a birds eye view of Venice and it is like no other city I've seen.
I didn't find our tour guide to be very informative, however, the overview of the city is helpful in capturing the essence of Venice. Bring a map of the city to get most from your tour

If you think your going to Venice during the summer and have the place to yourself, think again. If that doesn't bother you, I say go for it. If you think Venice will be a cheap vacation spot, think again. If that doesn't bother you, go for it! We loved the Grand Canal and looking at the architecture. We shelled out the bucks and did the Gondola. Really if you're going to go that far, do the Gondola. There are several different companies operating in the different allyways. We passed an old theater and Mozarts accomodations. The students and my own kids felt it epitomized Venice.

Took a Vaporetto pass for 24 hours, went around Venice but mainly cruised the Canal on and off for a morning and an evening. Do not miss it. I personally like the Vaporetto better than the gondola ( less romantic I know) as you meet tons of fun people and hop on and off as you wish.
We even took it to Murano and Burano and spent the afternoon there.
Amazing city. Grand Canal is unique in the world . Do not miss it. Make a point to spend time around the Rialto bridge. Tons of gondolas and boats in a totally unorganized but perfectly functional ballet. Great show, and free to.

On my first visit to Venice, I arrived by cruise ship...not airplane...and entered via the Grand Canal.
How appropriate....just like the ancient merchants who traded in Venice. The sights are marvelous & we eventually passed St. Marks Square. The traffic on the water was very heavy. Large boats carrying a100 people or more, fancy yachts, and even two passenger outboards....all seemed to be in a big hurry to get somewhere. We eventually boarded one of the 50 passenger taxis to travel to St. marks & the experience was even more authentic in the smaller boat. Loved it.
