“Try this brilliant restaurant!”
Reviewed February 20, 2013 via mobile

Can't believe some of the recent reviews of the alla Madonna!
It is excellent on all counts and is certainly a "must" for anyone visiting Venice - one of the most expensive places to eat in the world!- and looking for great, well-priced food in a traditional Italian trattoria!
Yes, it is initially difficult to find tucked down a little alley on the right hand side of the Grand Canal over the Rialto Bridge, opposite the Rialto Vaporetto stop, but it's well worth searching it out!
As you walk in you're struck by the array of fresh fish and shellfish on display - a great indication of what's to come if you're a fish lover!
My wife adores fish, of any variety, and just loved her fresh crabmeat starter and grilled sea bass main course, whilst I had a great ravioli starter followed by veal alla Milanese (breadcrumbs) - both wonderful! Had lovely artichokes and French fries as side dishes - both fresh and delicious! Even their bread was one of the nicest we'd eaten as the Italians aren't great on bread in my view!
I had the home-made tiramisu, which was really nice, and an Italian favourite!
The service was friendly and attentive throughout and the place was nice and buzzy, giving it a great atmosphere.
We'd been recommended to go and try out alla Madonna and were so glad we found it!
Cannot recommend it enough and please try it out! You won't be disappointed I'm sure!

“I love this place”
Reviewed February 17, 2013

In a dark alleyway just off the Grand Canal and near the Rialto Bridge you will find Trattoria alla Madonna. Finding it of course is half the appeal, but in city where you can be served some of the worst and most expensive meals of your life this place is an exception. Traditional Italian with a great atmosphere the seafood from the lagoon or the Adriatic is excellent as is the tira mi su, probably the best I have ever tasted and I have tasted many on my world travels.
Most importantly this is not a Venice ripoff and represents good value for money. One of Peggy Guggenheim's favourites and one of mine too.

“Poor service, poor food and over priced”
Reviewed February 17, 2013

We were looking for a restaurant for our party of 10 of our first night in Venice, had a look at the menu, looked OK, all of the usual standard food you would expect. We were 'hovering' deciding whether to go in or not and then saw the very good tripadvisor rating on the door so thought we were in safe hands.

We were shown to a corner room with no windows and crammed in. The waiter was rushing us to make a choice, once we had ordered, a mixture of pasta dishes, chicken and veal our order arrived in less than 10 minutes (obviously not freshly cooked), spaced out over 5 minutes or so, so the people who had their meal first were almost finished by the time the last person received theirs.

Overall everyone that had pasta was disappointed, the chicken was dry, but the veal and accompanying vegetables got a thumbs up.

As soon as we asked for the bill the waiter was hovering to turn his table and probably make sure we paid!

We are outside within 45 minutes, €208 lighter (we only had one course each, beware the service and cover charges) wondering what had just happened!

Overall I wouldn't recommend this restaurant, we had the distinct feeling that they knew we were tourists and didn't need to worry about repeat business.

Needless to say they didn't get any repeat business from us.

“Dont usually comment but experience was so bad”
Reviewed February 17, 2013

10 of us ate here, and I think only 1 person enjoyed their meal, we had only just ordered food and within a couple on minutes it was on the table! didn't have time to eat bread that they charge you for, They couldn't wait to bring the bill and hovered over us until we had paid, cost us over 200 euros for 1 bad meal each, 3 beers and 2 bottles of water! We don't mind paying when we feel we have value for money, taught us an expensive lesson on our 1st night in Venice and we couldn't fault any of the others that we ate at.
