My wife found this place with The Lonely Planet. We went there for lunch and what a great experience it was!

We ordered a cheese and slices of assorted meat platter for two. Also we tried their prosecco and chardonnay (at their recommendation). The outside seatings were almost full. There was only waitress. During the order, she apologized to us that it could take some minutes to prepare the platter. We were in no rush, so it didn't bother us.

Around 1pm the sun was burning at our skin. We asked the waitress for moving to another table. By coincidence there were some new Italian customers who tried to claim the table where we were moving to at the same time. The waitress told them friendly that the table has been already reserved for us. What a service!

The food is great. The waitress kindly explained what was served on the table. The blue cheese was amazing. What a combination it was with our wines! The bread was oven warm. Delicious! When the bread basket was empty, she gave us a new complementary new basket of bread. How nice!

We ended up having a 2 hour lunch. We were so into the food and wine, we lost the track of time. We have enjoyed every minute of it.

+ Great wines
+ Great food
+ Kind service
+ Great ambience

+/- The was only waitress. She is a hard worker and she was doing everything she can. But sometimes you need to have some healthy patience for their slow service.

- None

If tapas is on your brain, stay away from Venice. Here you bar crawl popping into each bacari for a cicheto (small plate) and a small glass of vino.
This night we were gang marched by adorable, strong chums, into La Cantina, where the words,'simple, honest fare', freshly prepared is what you get via imaginative dishes. On the bar was a tray of oysters on ice which the barman shucked to order, behind it a counter of fresh fish and an ancient hand-operated slicer for the charcuterie, and on the blackboard around 30 wines available by the glass.

Raw fish is a speciality, and my femme's trio of minced salmon, lightly seared tuna with finely chopped cucumber and sea-bass with tomatoes, prepared right in front of her, were melt-in-the-mouth fresh - the best she had eaten in Venice.
The bovine in our group plumped for the platter of creative crostini.... full of surprises - tongue piled high under fresh horseradish shavings, salted beef with smoked ricotta and chopped pickle. I stop talking as i savour the delights before me. Great food is a creation and our "designer" is obsessive about his fame and deservedly so. Be prepared to humour his whims and wait patiently. What better reason than to sample from the list of wines. We were so-so thankful for our delights.

La Cantina is noted for its cichetti, or snacks, and the chef makes them all and has a special menu each day. He uses the freshest ingredients. We stopped on our way to dinner and had a hard time not eating too much of his tasty creations before our main meal. The next time we returned to La Cantina and made the cichetti our main meal.

I visited La Cantina this evening and, as you can see from scores of excellence, it did not disappoint on all the fronts that restaurants can be judged upon. But the one sad thing is that it is now frequented by very loud Americans. Why is it that Americans are completely unable to converse in anything but a shouting match? Perhaps they equate volume with what we would recognise as stimulating conversation? Anyway, La Cantina is still a wonderful place and they can't be held to blame for noisy Americans.
