“Lovely atmosphere in the rialto mercato”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2013

We had a lovely meal here. I think the place is known for its wine and chicetti. Our cheese plate with onion relish was a revalation. They made a simple pasta dish for our daughter. The ombrina encrusted in fennel was fine...the fennel crust was a little soggy and the broccoli tasted too much of anchovy for my taste (but this was what the menu said, so that's me not really liking anchovies). The Duck was really delicious. We skipped dessert, but only because we were tired. The waiters were lovely. we sat upstairs and it was so peaceful and quiet even though by the time we left it was full. There were quite a few children there but we didn't even notice until we left. We had a table looking out over the canal...overall a really lovely experience, highly recommend!

“Lovely wine bar”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 4, 2013

Before going to Venice we had read that the locals often have a snack in one of the many "bacari" in town (wine bar with snacks). So we went to the area around the Rialto Bridge looking for a place where we could take a break and have a snack and a glass of wine -- not a place to sit down and have dinner. Some of the reviewers who rated this Osteria poorly were disappointed with the food. But my partner and I had such a lovely time downstairs (standing near the bar) sampling wine and the delightful snacks (cicheti) that we went back a few times more over the days we spent in Venice. Each glass of wine we sampled -- white and red -- was excellent and a good price. The cicheti were also excellent -- for example, the squid-ink polenta squares with a shrimp mixture on top was pure heaven! At one visit, the weather outside was quite mild, so we asked if we could bring our glasses of wine outside to sit by the canal (even though that area was closed, beginning of January). The staff were quite friendly and let us do that. At one point, on another visit, when a table inside was available, the bartender told us we could sit there without paying extra (what you order costs more when you sit at a table than when you stand by the bar). All in all, this bacara provided a lovely experience!

“Bar is excellent but go elsewhere for dinner”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 28, 2012

This place needs two reviews. 5 stars for the bar, 2.5 for the restaurant.

The bar is fabulous. There is a generous serve of Campari in the spritz and the snacks are excellent quality. The cod/bacala is heavenly and pure cod/olive oil/garlic; the sarde with onions are so good even my non-sardine eating partner loved them. Stand at the bar for the best value deal in this part of town. We went to the bar to the left of Bancogiro and it wasn't a patch on this place. We saw others order a cheese plate that was mouthwatering and an exquisite salami plate. Came to this bar 3 times and every time consistently great with friendly staff and lively atmosphere.

So if you want a meal, stay downstairs and graze. Upstairs is another matter and I think the chef needs to go and talk to his/her mother about how to cook simply. The wine list is excellent. The menu is interesting - I had the cocoa pasta with wild boar and pear. OK - somewhat adventurous but I've had some strange combinations in Italy and loved them so trusted the chef on this. It was OK, but served a little cold. Nothing special. My partner had a pumpkin soup with scallops; same result. Our two different fish dishes looked exactly the same - overlooked broccoli with yummy caramelised onions either side of the plate with a fish fillet in the middle. Felt like a production line meal. My partner's with the basil sauce was best, mine was shy drum (that's what the menu said!) in a fennel crust. A 5mm stodgy crust that tasted like nought (worse actually) and caked a dried out fish that was no longer shy, just totally frazzled. Food and water came to around Euro95. so my rating for the restaurant would normally be 3 but at that price 2.5 is my pretty generous rating.

Keep it simple guys. This menu tries to hard and doesn't succeed.

Eat downstairs and put your savings towards a gondola ride on the canals.

“Great food, smaller portions.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2012 via mobile

Had a great meal and great wine. Lovely, friendly efficient service. Prices are typical of Venice. Food was excellent but portions were on the small side. Didn't seem to detract from a great experience though.

“Great for Chichetti”

And so close to to the Rialto and not far from the water's edge. Good wine, good food and pleasant atmosphere.
