“Excellent pre-cruise stay!”
Reviewed July 24, 2013

We stayed at Hotel Canal Grande for our pre-cruise one night stay in Venice. We booked four rooms by booking.com, and the reviews are spot on. Service, location, price, rooms... all very good value and very good. Rooms are very clean, beautiful traditional Venetian decor, but high tech and newly renovated rooms and bathrooms. The TV is inside the mirror in our room ! Quiet rooms, and the hotel has an elevator. Breakfast included was fantastic, and their coffee was so good !

We booked water taxi for 11 of us and with ALOT of luggage, (10 pieces of check in luggage plus 5 cabin size) and we arrived in style to the entrance of the hotel. The hotel staff took all the luggage and arranged for them to be brought to our rooms in lightning speed. Check In was great.

They gave us map and directions how to walk to St Mark's square, it was a long walk for us because we had young children, but otherwise, a 30 minute walk gets you there for sure.

We ate at a nearby restaurant for dinner, and next morning, we checked out, booked a walking tour with our private guide, and then Hotel Canal Grande booked a water taxi for us to go to the cruise terminal. It was wonderful and I would not hesitate to stay at this hotel again in Venice.

If you want to be more near St Mark's Square, then maybe this hotel may not be the location you want. But it is a nice hotel, and walking distance to St Mark's square, and Rialto Bridge.

This hotel is located right across the Scalzi Bridge from the train station. We had a lovely suite overlooking the Grand Canal. The view was absolutely breathtaking. The main sights are accessible by vaporetto or a meandering stroll. Across the Canal, in the Canareggio Sestiere, there are many solid restaurants within walking distance from the hotel.

However, we returned from an amazing day of exploring Venice to find the heater on in our room (it was a humid August night). The controls did not respond, and the man working the front desk was quite rude when I explained the problem to him (I speak passable Italian) over the phone. We opened the windows and were greeted with a swarm of mosquitoes. I went in person to the front desk and the man made me explain the situation again before telling me that he would turn it off himself since I was unable to do so. He returned to the room with me, rudely silenced my wife when she told him about the mosquitoes, and became even more angry when I told him not to speak to my wife in that manner. He left, stating that he would call someone to repair it. Meanwhile, we sweated and were devoured by mosquitoes. He returned later with a can of insect repellant and told us no one was available to fix the heater. He suggested we open the windows and spray the repellant sporadically throughout the night. The next day, a manager listened patiently to our story and gave us a bottle of Prosecco. She explained that her night attendant was going through personal problems.

I understand that this was a highly unlikely event, and the hotel is beautiful and well-situated. However, to have one of our precious nights in Venice ruined in this manner, and to be treated so unprofessionally, was incredibly disappointing.

I booked this hotel solely based on reviews. My husband and I stayed three nights as a surprise birthday present for him. I was nervous having booked without conferring with him, but the reviews were spot on. And we struck upon a solution to the oft mentioned issue of it being tricky to find....take a water taxi to the hotel. Friends told us it was the only way to arrive in Venice. We thought the £100 or so expensive, so we booked a shared water taxi on line (€27pp). It was fast, exhilarating and stylish and we were taken directly to the hotel's landing stage. No dragging our suitcase through the streets and over the bridges (which are stepped).
The hotel staff's welcome was warm and friendly and we were shown to our room (prestige double room). It was on the 2nd floor opening on to a side alley. Somehow I hadn't expected it to be quite so smart. I knew it wouldn't be huge, as rooms aren't in Venice, but it had everything. I suppose it didn't have tea/coffee making stuff but we didn't miss that. The bathroom was compact but very smart and clean. The adjustable air conditioning worked a treat and we were glad to have a room on the side as we decided it could have been noisy overlooking the Grand Canal.
The buffet breakfast (7am-10am) offered wide choice. The fresh fruit salad was particularly good. The breakfast set us up for our days of exploring Venice. (Take comfy shoes!)
The hotel's landing stage has room for three tables. Wander round Venice, come back for a refreshing shower then sit outside at one of those tables with a glass of Prosecco. My husband recommends the cold beer.
As for the location of the hotel, we thought it ideal. It was very picturesque but away from the main tourist areas. They could be easily accessed by foot or boat, as can anywhere in Venice really. We'd love to return to Venice and if we do, we shall certainly stay at Hotel Canal Grande.

We had a great two stay in mid-July with our kids. The hotel overlooks the Grande Canal and is with walking distance of the water bus stop. Our room was huge and room. The room was elegant and updated. The breakfast was great. The staff was extremely helpful and always available. They little dock in front of the hotel was a great place to relax and watch the boats go by.

A couple side notes:

Venice does smell. I know there are a lot of travel bloggers that try to state the contrary but simply search the Internet for British scientist explain Venice smell and you'll find out that the smell is simply because that the historic district has no sewer lines and there is no way to dig up the city to install them. That being said, the smell is somewhat strong in the morning but gone by noon. Venice is still a beautiful city that is a must see but it does smell.

The 24-48-72 hour water bus tickets are worth it. They let you hop on/off as many times at you want. A water taxi ride will cost you $50-$100 anywhere in the city. Also, the city is so tiny you can walk end to end in 40minutes and it's a beautiful walk.

The glass factory tours consist of 15min of watching glass blowing followed by a tour of their showroom. They arrange for a free water taxi to and from this hotel. There is no high pressure sales but they definiately try to sell you something. The average price of a large plate or vase that is hand blown is about $3500 Euro. They don't display the prices so we were surprised when we asked about a bowl we really liked. They will negotiate down about 40%.

The Hotel Canal Grande in Venice is one of our favorite hotel stays! It's a bit tricky to find if you're new to Venice. It's in a small square only accessible from an alley, very easy to miss. We walked in, very hot and tired from our journey, and were greeted with enthusiastic welcomes and greetings (and ice waters) from the front desk staff. Throughout our stay the staff - from the owners/front desk to the bell boy/bartender to the breakfast girls - we all stellar. We could not have possibly felt more welcome and appreciated as guests.

The room was very nice. We had 2 windows overlooking the canal, a canopy bead, antique furniture, and a well appointed bathroom. The walls were a golden fabric that matched the canopy of the bed. The room was comfortable and quiet, the bed was comfortable and (after a quick lesson) the bath and shower were great. The TV is actually built into the mirror - which helps to preserve the original look of the room.

The location of the hotel is on the opposite side of the canal from the main tourist area, but it's an easy walk around to cross back over to the Rialto Market. You can zig-zag back to the hotel using a more direct but less-populated route, or you can take the main street back through all the stores and shops. Both routes are a great adventure!

Our favorite thing about this hotel, however, was enjoying a couple drinks on the private balcony over the canal before leaving on our adventures. Watching the boats and canal was just great.

This hotel is not for those on a tight budget. That said, everything about it was exceptional. We would certainly recommend it to anyone visiting Venice!

We just spent 2 days at this lovely hotel. The personal service was outstanding. Location is perfect on the Grand Canal , very romantic and much quieter than staying near St Mark's square. We are picky travelers , and were pleasantly surprised with the upscale and clean rooms. Breakfast buffet ( cold items) is included in the price and the selection is more than adequate. A small terrace overlooks the canal and you can eat breakfast on the terrace if a table is available. We had coffee in the evening on this terrace and complimentary cookies were provided without asking.

We arrived via the train and the hotel is a short walk from the station but you will need to haul your bags over one steep bridge ( that goes over the Grand Canal) and one smaller bridge to reach the hotel. If your bags are heavy, consider hiring a porter at the entrance of the Canal bridge for bag transport.

There is a main walking pathway that starts from the Canal Bridge opposite the hotel that wraps around to the Rialto bridge area, then onto St Mark's Square. This is the longer path with shops lining the route that minimizes the chance to get lost. Otherwise it is so easy to get lost cutting through the city ( which actually is part of the allure of the town!), yet the town is safe and locals were helpful in putting you back on track. I actually felt that a compass would have been more useful then the local maps that are available.

The local restaurants recommended by the hotel staff were outstanding and reasonably priced. The seafood and pasta dishes were standouts.

We would love to come to Venice again in the future and would stay again at the Hotel Canal Grande in a heartbeat!
