“Lovely hotel and perfect location”
Reviewed April 28, 2014

My expectation was not so high, because I made a lot of negative experiences in Venice in the past. We arrived at San Stae at the vaporetto stop and were a little bit confused because we couldn´t see any hotel sign. It is a kind of inkognito hotel - no signs outside. But to make the first step into the lovely courtyard makes you feel happy. We arrived early at 1pm but we only had to wait 10 minutes and our room was ready. We had a room to the backyard which was very quiet and a nice view to the green courtyard. The room itsself was lovely decorated with a hugh bathroom .. new and modern style. Very clean. The bed was comfortable. In the night you couldn´t hear anything from other rooms and that is not common for hotels in South Europe. It was very pleasant. The breakfast was fine. Only the scramble eggs were terrible and you had to ask for a fresh orange juice, the one offered on the buffet was not a fresh one. The cappucchino and pastries were fine. It is a pitty that the hotel doesn´t has a terrace to the Grand Canal - that would be a highlight. Our next time in Venice will definitly be again in Palazzo Giovanelli.

Room Tip: We had a the room 401 - to the backyard, which was very quiet.

Great location and hotel, however outside of that we weren't impressed! Being my first trip to Europe, I was nervous and stalked online reviews. I promised myself, when we got back I would write reviews for everything...9 months late, but here goes.

The hotel is very close to the vaperetto stop which is convenient. We stayed in a superior double room - spacious, comfortable bed, great ac, however it was the WORST bathroom. The shower did not have a curtain or side that separated it from the rest of the bathroom so every time you took a shower everything got soaked and the bathroom flooded. Horrible setup! It was so frustrating because the entire time we were there the floor and everything in there was wet. In addition to that, the toilet continued to run the entire time. We mentioned it a few hours after checking in and they said they would send someone to check on it while we were out. When we came after dinner no one had been by so we mentioned it again and they sent someone up. After the maintenance person left the first time we used the restroom it went back to running. Again, we said something to the front desk and they had an attitude and said it would stop on it own, but would send someone. No one ever came by so we gave up on saying something again and it continued to run for the next 30 hours of our stay. The continental breakfast was our least favorite of our 13 day trip in Italy, still lots of options but not on the same level as the other hotels we stayed at. Also, there was a charge for wi-fi (again this was not something we encountered at the other hotels in Italy). If we went back to Venice I would probably select a different hotel. We slept okay, room was nice, but the staff was not helpful and the room bathroom caused lots of frustration as you tried to shower get ready and the continues noise of the running toilet.

One plus we didn't realize until the last night, there is an 'english' option for the tv. At night and in the morning we would turn it on as we got ready, but even though they were american shows/channels they were in italian. Last night my husband realized there was a way to change the language setting to english. Yes, probably just an oversight on our part but something to know. :)

We booked this hotel for its location and the interconnecting room-set up that it is able to provide. We were a family party of two adults and two kids aged 14 and 11. We travelled to Venice via Rome - a 3 hour train journey from the centre of Rome right into the heart of Venice, walk 20 steps from the exit of the station and you would fall into the Grand Canal. I would recommend that mode of transport, good value, efficient, clean, fast, a glass of prosecco at 248kmh ! Palazzo Giovanelli is very convenient for getting to from the train station. Vaporetto stop right next door. Lovely building. We really liked the Santa Croce area, somehow manages to be central but also away from the crowds, lots of nice little lanes and restaurants / shops / cafes / galleries etc, 7 or 8 mins walk to Rialto Bridge. I read someone on here say it was easy to get lost around here, well I guess that is true but only if you lack very basic map reading abilities. I'm not great at maps but soon got the hang of getting about. Our rooms were decent size by Venice standards, interconnecting as requested. All perfectly clean. Small criticism - a bottle of water and a kettle/tea/coffee in the room should perhaps be provided at this level of hotel ? Otherwise we were very happy with everything. The staff on the front desk were great, really helpful with lots of details. Special mention to Federica, who was lovely. The ladies running the breakfast buffet service were very friendly and efficient. The actual breakfast buffet was great. We asked the hotel to book us a Private Guide for the morning, and the one they booked for us - Vilma Calzavara - was first class. Very knowledgeable, told us all about the history of Venice and kept the kids interested and took us to lots of places we would not have known to visit, special churches and shops (a brilliant little pastry shop) and showed us where to buy the best chocolate ice cream in the city, and finished by taking us to a special restaurant where we ate great Venetian food in a little non-touristy place just behind the Rialto bridge, where you could see the chef preparing the food in front of you. I would certainly book the Palazzo Giovanelli again, for the the staff and location.

Room Tip: 202 and 203 connect. (Not Canal view).

Hotel was clean enough and staff were willing to upgrade after spending one night in a very small room. The beds were very firm which didn't suit me. The location was convenient for getting the vaporetta but the surrounding area is a labyrinth of back alleys. It was very easy to get lost especially at night. Having caught the vaporetta to more central areas by St Mark's square the area is much more pleasant. The room was spotless but lacked tea and coffee making facilities and there is no restaurant. The view along the Grand Canal was worth seeing.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a canal view

We stayed at the Hotel Palazzo Giovanelli April 2 & 3, 2014. The hotel was very clean. The hotel staff was excellent and very helpful. Our room was very nice and plenty spacious. The hotel is in a great location for catching the Vaporetto or for walking. We enjoyed sitting in the courtyard at night. The Wisteria was blooming and the nights were cool, perfect setting. This was our first trip to Venice, we are looking forward to another trip as soon as possible. We will be sure to book this hotel again.

Room Tip: Our room was on the first floor facing the courtyard. We kept our windows open since the temperature...

I stayed at the Giovanelli from April 2 to April 6. I booked a 'run of house' room and was very pleasantly surprised to find the room that had been assigned to me - spacious, comfortable, with a very modern and spotless bathroom, excellent toiletries, good linen. Needless to say that the location is perfect, on the canal, just a delightful 5' walk to Rialto market and a few vaporetto stations away from San Marco. A special thanks to the reception staff, always helpful and welcoming, particularly Pierluca Cecchini, assistant mgr., as well as the young ladies who served breakfast.

I would like to congratulate and thank all the staff for looking after our guests from the 3rd-5th April 2014. The guests staying at this hotel were attending my wedding in Venice and i must say when another 'leading' hotel let us down, Palazzo Giovanelli came to our rescue. The rooms allocated to us were probably the best we have seen for a long time. I would seriously recommend this hotel. Thank you again. You guys were great.
