“Exceptional”

I had to wait until December 30th to have the best meal of the year. Il Ritrovo seemed like the place to go in Venice, and i was not disappointed. In a city which pretty much does nothing else but cater for tourists, finding a good restaurant is never hard, but finding a great one is very difficult. Just behind St Marc's square, il Ritrovo is a beautiful, modern, designer little place. Service is delightfully friendly. The menu is short, but full of Venetian speicalties, slightly revisited and modernised. The ingredients are superb, and incredibly fresh, especially the seafood from the laguna: shrim, langoustines, octopus, fish, etc are amazing. The preparations respect these ingredients, often cooking them sous vide at pow temperature, resulting in incredibly tasteful, juicy, lively, vobrant dishes. We went there twice in oen day, once for lunch, qnd once for dinner, simply necause we hadn't had enough yet! The second time was even better. I think every dish here is good. And never quite what you expect... Always better. The wine list is terrific, with many of Italy's best producers, including in older vintages. This is a chef to ŵatch. He will go far, i am sure. Tis is hon, est, dedicated work. No shortcuts here. Ad incredibly reasonnable proces for the moment. The Michelin guide, which is yet to give this restaurant its first, and well deserved, star, once again demonstrates that it has a hard time with retaurants which refuse the plush carpets/gold plated taps decor of yestyear. Take advantage of the opportunity!

“Do not miss this one”
Reviewed December 13, 2012

We stumbled across this one on our way to San Marco from our hotel, and what a find. It's a little more expensive than the average but worth every cent. We couldn't fault anything - the service, the food, the wine and the decor. That doesn't happen much anywhere in the world so when it does, it's a rather special voyage of discovery all on its own. If you want a plate full of wholesome, farm-style food, this is not for you. But if you love to entertain your palate, do not miss this one. It is fine food, but not over-finessed. Delicious.

“Light, beautiful and delicious”
Reviewed December 3, 2012

'Light, beautiful and delicious', that's a loose translation of the three Italian words written under the 'surprise' four-course menu. At €60, it might seem expensive but to be honest, with food of this quality, it's a real treat. We went to Il Ridotto last year and repeated the experience this year. We weren't disappointed. A lovely, mainly fish-based menu, great flavours, beautiful presentation and a calm and collected chef who takes the time to come into the dining room and talk to the guests.

What's really nice is to see young people come and dine here: we had a very young couple, very much in love, at the table next to us and I was expecting him to whip out a diamond ring out of his pocket at any minute. He didn't... maybe when we'd left?

The only criticism was that service was a bit swift, we would have preferred a slightly longer pause between courses. But all in all, a great place in Venice and with its contemporary decor, good lighting, beautiful crockery, great wine list and, of course, light, beautiful and delicious food, a definite must for any foodie.

“For a great experience, use caution”
Reviewed November 26, 2012

We have dined here four times in four years. The first three meals were among the best we have had in Venice, or Italy, for that matter. The entire concept, from reception, to design, to seating, to cooking, to plating, to the amazing wine selection, is steps way beyond the typical fish tratorrias of Venice. Everything is, generally, on the cerebral side, and, generally, exquisitely executed. This year, however, we experienced some major potholes that were actaully startling, in a quite bad way. We had four dishes, two of which were great successes. The other two were not only poorly conceived, poorly executed, but, also, poorly out of sinc with what the restaurant has tried to do from the beginning, which is to offer an elevated style of cooking in Venice, which normally offers very straight forward, simple cooking. He did a fried calamari that you would find in any fry shop, and it was rubbery and overcooked. Of the five or so rings, we could manage only one. No one questioned our nearly full plates being returned. The second dish was a beef cheek preparation, that you might find in any French bistro, but not good. I don't know how you completely dry out the fat from a braised beef cheeck, but they managed it here. We each ate one of the five or six on our plates, and returned the rest. No one questioned our full plates. We also had a fifth plate, of cheese. The selection was not explained, just placed in front of us. Our bill for two was over 400 euros with wine, so it was curious to find the staff so dismissive this time around. We have always puzzled at the emptiness of the dining room, as it was, again, this time. After this experience, we are less puzzled. Though this was a three star experience, I am giving it four stars for its past performance, and the two wonderful dishes they did off this time, plus the best wine list in Venice.
