Close to the Campo S. Apostoli, Promessi Sposi was packed with locals and tourists. It is an osteria, which means the food is traditional and simple fare so if you are looking for gourmet go elsewhere. We ordered the "bigoi in salsa", a local dish that is composed of sardines and onions, the fegato alla veneziana (liver Venetian style) well known by my Italian husband who loved it, and "fritto misto". The fritto misto remained crisp to the last bite, the mark of one well made. The service was very attentive and friendly and we will definitely return for a second visit.

We stumbled in here by mistake. By the time we realized we were in the wrong restaurant we had already ordered. Good thing. The staff was friendly and helpful. Our main dish -- sea bass for two -- was superb. Prices were moderate.

This place might be a little hard to find, so get good directions and enjoy the meal.

Osteria La Bottega ai Promessi Sposi was the best place we dined in during our trip in Venice. A few clues to their outstanding food; they only serve a few things which varies daily (i.e. they make things fresh), the staff were wonderful and treated us kindly; and the food was just outstanding. I had the best pasta dish I’d eaten in all of Italy. And I know this doesn’t seem like much, but they had table water (i.e. free). Every other restaurant in Venice preys on tourists and don’t even offer tap water. This place did, and it’s because they seemed like they ran themselves as a genuinely good restaurant intent on making their customers happy (which, by the way, seemed to be 90%+ locals). Not to mention, their prices are extremely reasonable. Overall, we recommend this restaurant with the highest confidence.

We ate at lunchtime and opted for their daily specials. The steak was mouthwateringly tender and the fish dish (I forget which) was beautifully prepared and presented. We asked particularly if the restaurant would be open for lunch on the following day - but when we arrived it was shut for flooding.

We had a great dinner here! While some reviewers have said the service was not great, we had the opposite experience. The waiter we had was very outgoing and fun, and was quick to make some suggestions when we asked. We tried the nero di seppia, and we loved it. And I tried the scallops with roe. Both dishes were excellent. My husband had steak, and I had pasta with mushrooms. There were several large tables of locals near us, and they seemed to be ordering large plates of things that they all shared - a great way to sample lots of different things. It was a great casual spot.
