We walked around San Marco and Castello for a place to eat. We ended up in the closest place to our hotel and what a find!! The staff were very friendly the food was very good! Prawn Cocktail starter and Veal main were fantastic, cannelloni was only ok. Would definitely go back and try more. The pizza is supposed to be the speciality and it looked very good. All in all we enjoyed a great evening and great food! Only gave a 4 for value as there we no Rose by the glass, the wife will have to learn to drink white when we go back.

The good news is that it was open on New Years Day. Was our third night out of our holiday and perhaps we could have been a little over fed/tired but this place looked good, warm interior on a winters day. From the off the service was over friendly/familiar, trying ever so hard to push the specials of the day (without commenting on price). We had a full range of pasta/fish/meat and were very disappointed. Sole Meuniere arrived with what could only be described as white sludge as a saucee and the fish underneath was mushy. My son had a fillet steak ( no steak knives) and tender it wasn't. His fries were so under done they were still almost white. My chosen wine wasn't available. While waiting (20 mins+) on the bill I noticed a lot of French visitors..and to a man/woman, they had ordered pizza. Very wise.

We chose this place one evening based on the number of folks dining inside versus some of the other local places. This trattoria had a good crowd of Italians versus tourists.

The staff was very friendly and accommodating and the food was well above average for Venice. Healthy portions.

Would opt to go back next time in Venice.

It's not as easy as it sounds to get friendly waiters in places like Venice, I can understand they must be burnt out by having to smil to all those tourists, but for me it's what makes the difference a place to remember and go back to and one where you wish you've never been.

It's a little bit out of the way but not far enough from San Marco so you can't find it easily enough. Their specialties are pizzas, what else, but the other plates are well worth trying. If you appreciate being treated like a person and not like a tourist, you'll like this place

We were in Venice for three nights, had already chosen one restaurant for dinner, and wanted to find somewhere new.

Why do many of the restaurants near San Marco feel it is ok to charge an additional 12% Service, plus 2 Euros per person cover charge. My wife and I resent such 'greed' and normally avoid them.

But we persisted in our search and were pleasantly surprised to find a restaurant that looked very nice when looking in throught the windows: plus this reaction was boosted by the variety and choice of many set meals, varying from an extremely appealing 20 Euros to 100 Euros. As it was around mid-day we wondered if the the 20 Es meal was a lunch offer only. We went through the front door, was greeted in a very friendly manner by Pino whom we later learned was the proprietor. He read our minds and declared that the meal was also available in the evening: we said 'great' and 'we'll come back tonight'.

In the evening the place was buzzing with atmosphere and people there was barely a free table. Pino welcomed us and a charming waitor took us to our table. We chose the 20 Es dinner and started perusing the wine list. An aside - 'we' love Italy, 'we adore Italian food, and have visited Tuscany (specifically Montalcino, a beautiful olde unspoiled hill-top) town three times so far.On our first trip to Montalcino we discovered Castello Banfi wines.

So, seeing one of our favourite wines on the list, Rosso di Montalcino, Banfi, I decided that as this was the anniversary of our engagement (I proposed on a Gondola!), we'd push the boat out and ordered a bottle. Our lovely waitor was surprised in the nicest of ways. After all, how many people order two 20 Es dinners, then order wine costing more than twice the cost of dinner?! He returned moments later with two beautiful Banfi glasses and the evening began.

Our waitor was friendly and took care of our every need, materialising when needed. Dinner was delightful and the evening was one we hope to repeat on our next visit whenever that may be.

A very slight criticism was that the tables are rather close together, although were I in Pino's shoes I would probably do the same.

Thank you Pino and his friendly team, including the unseen Chef Extraordinaire who cooked our mouth-watering dinner.

Roll on next time....
