“Lovely hotel, helpful staff, excellent breakfast”
Reviewed April 10, 2014

We stayed at this hotel April 2014 from Friday to Sunday. We were late arriving due to our flight being delayed and they accommodated us in the restaurant. Breakfast is lovely and the room and bedding is top quality. The hotel is situated either a 15 minute walk from St Marks Square or two stops on the Valporetta (Water Bus). There is a local café which serves ok food, but I would not recommend it, it is overpriced for what you get. This was our first visit to Venice, and although it is a lovely City, we found it very overpriced. I would however, recommend this hotel, and the food is excellent.

Wonderful breakfast, knowledgeable staff, clean, well-kept rooms. Near the water bus stop.

Only advice: watch the prices at the bar, 15-20 euros per mixed drink (and the bartender wasn't in a great mood)

Being absolutely in love with Venice, and having stayed in many hotels there, I must confess that Sant’Elena is the best one! And still my favorite! For me it’s like a second home, and it is always a pleasure to come back.
During my last visit in March 2014 I was very glad to see that after the renovation the rooms look even more stylish than they were before. White colors and simple colors still dominate in decoration, but new elements added give the rooms absolutely luxury look.
If I were describing the hotel for the first time I would say that it is in a perfect location: in a green and residential area which is very close to the main Biennale venue, to Lido which is great during the summer time, away from the crowds but still easily reachable. It is absolutely true 4 stars plus hotel which is not a common thing in Venice. With the staff you are always glad to see again, and who are very professional and helpful. What else? Free wi-fi of course which is a must for me in a hotel, terrific breakfast (although I am always afraid to put extra kilos because of the fantastic cakes they serve among other things) and very clean rooms.
Only one phrase is left: thank you once again for a lovely stay! No! Another one: I home to come back soon!!!

We stayed at this hotel when my girlfriend and I booked a night trip to Venice. Everything was spot on with the hotel. The room was spacious, modern and comfortable, The breakfast was really nice, with a great continental selection and all of the staff were really friendly. The hotel is slightly away from the main tourist areas but we actually liked that, plus its easily walkable to St Marks square with great views along the wat or theres a Vaparetto stop nearby. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

Wished we could stay longer!, cozy, comfortable and modern hotel away from the rush of the touristic area...yet very easily accessible by water boat. Nothing to miss from a five stars hotel...Staff is professional and friendly, our room was setup to accommodate our family of three and was spacious and comfortable ( it is not an old hotel, on the contrary looks like either very recently built or fully renovated). There are a couple local stores a couple blocks away to get groceries, water, wine, etc even a place to get fresh fruit/vegetables. Water taxi station is across a beautiful park three blocks away.

Be careful when timing your trip back to the train station as it takes much longer on the way back!...( we missed our Train!).

Breakfast buffet is included, they could probably improve the quality of the eggs ( a bit too much milk perhaps), but besides this it was excellent with good mix of tasty bread types, fresh coffee, pastries, hams etc,

Room Tip: ours overlooked a canal in the back and was very quiet!!

We spent 5 nights at the Best Western Sant Elena, and overall were very happy with our stay.

Being an old convent, there is a lot of variation from room to room. Our room (314, a double on the second floor) was an adequate size, and had a nice view over towards the military academy playing fields (the downside is that you might hear reveille and taps being sounded). While some people might prefer a room with a garden view, we’d have to say that in mid March the interior courtyard garden was looking a little unloved.

There were a few things that weren’t perfect. The shower over the bath might be a little tight for larger people, and the double bed was two single beds pushed together, with the consequent ridge down the join a potential irritant, although the beds themselves were comfortable enough. The bottom sheet on the bed wasn’t really wide enough, and came loose easily. The fridge in the room also struggled to get anything cold, and the internet was unavailable quite a few times during our stay. There is an inbuilt clock in the bottom of the TV that shines so brightly that we finished up draping towels over the TV at night to muffle the ghostly green effect.

The main downside was the that, to our taste, the public areas of the hotel were seriously overheated. You could start an orchid farm on some of the landings. The hotel could cut its costs and reduce its carbon footprint significantly by dropping the temperature a few degrees. Even after getting the heating turned off in our room, to avoid being far too hot we slept with the windows open and with a rolled up towel against the big gap under the hall door to keep the room cool.

The included breakfast was fine, although the same offerings every day was getting a bit stale after 5 days. Hot options are scrambled eggs, bacon, and small sausages, but there are lots of cereals, spreads, hardboiled eggs and fruit. Sherban and the rest of the breakfast staff were terrific. Although the breakfast room gets very full at peak times, and they were very busy clearing tables, they were always happy to make us an espresso.

We also thought the housekeeping and cleanliness of the hotel was also very good.

We didn’t eat at the restaurant, although it does get reasonable reviews on TA. Maybe because it’s basically the same place you ate breakfast it didn’t somehow appeal to us.

We found the area of Sant Elena to be very interesting. As well as the adjacent old church (rarely open) and the amazingly derelict-looking stadium that is home to the Venice football team there are lots of interesting walks to be had through the back streets of Castello to places like San Pietro di Castello, the gardens of the Biennale, and the Arsenale. Don’t forget to ask for a copy of the very good complimentary map from reception. Its only a 20 minute walk to Piazza San Marco, if that's where you think you need to be.

For seeing how the Venetians live, have a spritz or beer in the local Bar Vincent (next to the small soccer pitch) which somehow or other manages to score a mention in a UK Daily Telegraph article on Venice restaurants. The friendly local pizzeria (Vecia Gina) is probably a better bet for food, and has excellent pizza and polenta, as well as also being a great place to rub shoulders with the locals.

Dear Guest,

we appreciate you have found the time to write a so detailed review on our BEST WESTERN PREMIER Hotel Sant’Elena. We believe that guests’ comments are increasingly important to strengthen the quality of our services.

I am glad you enjoyed your 5 nights here. Our staff works exactly to make special every single moment you spend at our home.

Concerning your observation on the overheating of the public areas, I would like to let you know the heating plant was already turned off when you stayed here and, with the arrival of spring, it is possible that some hotel areas are a bit hotter than others.

We are honored you chose our hotel, and we will continue to do our best to be worthy of your selection.

Sincerely,

Loved the Sant Elena. Welcoming staff, lovely clean room and bathroom and a fabulous breakfast with lots of choice. In a quiet and attractive area. Comfortable bed. Close to Vaporetto stop with boats in all directions. Found the faster options by the end of our stay! Left our cases at the hotel on our final day and picked them up late afternoon. Would happily return to the hotel.

Room Tip: junior suite had a seating area.
