We spent 5 nights at the Best Western Sant Elena, and overall were very happy with our stay.

Being an old convent, there is a lot of variation from room to room. Our room (314, a double on the second floor) was an adequate size, and had a nice view over towards the military academy playing fields (the downside is that you might hear reveille and taps being sounded). While some people might prefer a room with a garden view, we’d have to say that in mid March the interior courtyard garden was looking a little unloved.

There were a few things that weren’t perfect. The shower over the bath might be a little tight for larger people, and the double bed was two single beds pushed together, with the consequent ridge down the join a potential irritant, although the beds themselves were comfortable enough. The bottom sheet on the bed wasn’t really wide enough, and came loose easily. The fridge in the room also struggled to get anything cold, and the internet was unavailable quite a few times during our stay. There is an inbuilt clock in the bottom of the TV that shines so brightly that we finished up draping towels over the TV at night to muffle the ghostly green effect.

The main downside was the that, to our taste, the public areas of the hotel were seriously overheated. You could start an orchid farm on some of the landings. The hotel could cut its costs and reduce its carbon footprint significantly by dropping the temperature a few degrees. Even after getting the heating turned off in our room, to avoid being far too hot we slept with the windows open and with a rolled up towel against the big gap under the hall door to keep the room cool.

The included breakfast was fine, although the same offerings every day was getting a bit stale after 5 days. Hot options are scrambled eggs, bacon, and small sausages, but there are lots of cereals, spreads, hardboiled eggs and fruit. Sherban and the rest of the breakfast staff were terrific. Although the breakfast room gets very full at peak times, and they were very busy clearing tables, they were always happy to make us an espresso.

We also thought the housekeeping and cleanliness of the hotel was also very good.

We didn’t eat at the restaurant, although it does get reasonable reviews on TA. Maybe because it’s basically the same place you ate breakfast it didn’t somehow appeal to us.

We found the area of Sant Elena to be very interesting. As well as the adjacent old church (rarely open) and the amazingly derelict-looking stadium that is home to the Venice football team there are lots of interesting walks to be had through the back streets of Castello to places like San Pietro di Castello, the gardens of the Biennale, and the Arsenale. Don’t forget to ask for a copy of the very good complimentary map from reception. Its only a 20 minute walk to Piazza San Marco, if that's where you think you need to be.

For seeing how the Venetians live, have a spritz or beer in the local Bar Vincent (next to the small soccer pitch) which somehow or other manages to score a mention in a UK Daily Telegraph article on Venice restaurants. The friendly local pizzeria (Vecia Gina) is probably a better bet for food, and has excellent pizza and polenta, as well as also being a great place to rub shoulders with the locals.

I am glad you enjoyed your 5 nights here. Our staff works exactly to make special every single moment you spend at our home.

Loved the Sant Elena. Welcoming staff, lovely clean room and bathroom and a fabulous breakfast with lots of choice. In a quiet and attractive area. Comfortable bed. Close to Vaporetto stop with boats in all directions. Found the faster options by the end of our stay! Left our cases at the hotel on our final day and picked them up late afternoon. Would happily return to the hotel.

Room Tip: junior suite had a seating area.

Just got back from a four day stay at Want Elena hotel whilst visiting Venice.
Its location is good. Only a two minute walk from the Vaporetti stop. Out of the expensive centre, but close enough the be able to get everywhere you want.
The room was wonderful, looking out onto the grassy center courtyard.
All of the staff were attentive, friendly, and answered all of our questions in a helpful manner. The Bar manager, Francesco was great, giving us tips on places to go and how to see ' hidden Venice'.
We only had breakfast at the hotel, but that was plentiful, fresh, and had a very large selection. Thank you to all the staff for making our stay special. We will be staying again!

We arrived just before 12 in the afternoon but our room wasn't ready. We were told to help ourself to coffee in the bar and they would see what they could do. But after an hour an half spent in the garden with coffees we returned to reception to see if the room was good to go. We only wanted to drop our bags and freshen up before getting out and about, but reception shrugged his shoulders and said they were dependent on housekeeping so nothing was forthcoming. I was a little perplexed, as in a good hotel reception would have contacted housekeeping to ready the room ASAP and considering we'd waited a good hr and half, this obviously hadn't been done and no one else was checking in at this time. So not a good start to customer service but we left our bags in reception and headed out. The room once we got it on our return in the evening was of good standard although not very big. It was extremely hot, day and night and the air con was obviously not working at this time of the season. Peaceful location and loved the fact that we were a little way from the main crowded touristy sites, although the ease and frequency of the vapporette made this not a problem when wanting to get to the heart of venice. Staff we're very nice and breakfast was ok, but cooked breakfast was disappointing.

The hotel is located at the outskirts of the city but very coveniently and closely located to the vaparettos, the local 'bus'service. We took a 72 hour pass and never had to wait more than 5 minutes for a vaparetto to arrive. The rooms are comfortable and clean, but we had to ask the receptionist to turn off the heating as it was far too hot to sleep and airco did not work yet. The breakfast is very good to italian standards, there is enough seating and plenty of choices at the buffet.

Difficult to fault this stylish hotel in a very quiet Venice suburb; and our suite was unquestionably spacious and stylish.

But somehow the ambience was more suited to a business centre than to a holiday resort, and raised or children's' voices were strangely absent (despite our weeks stay being in Carnevale!

Having said that, and noting an absence of English guests, it obviously suits many visitors, though we personally prefer somewhere with a bit more atmosphere!

My room in this hotel was smaller than the bathroom and was of a very odd shape. It was over heated and the window was very small with an uninspiring view. WiFi was inconsistent and the location, though quite pleasant, is a bit of a walk to attractions. Staff were courteous and the breakfast was reasonable. Unless you get a better room than I was given, I cannot recommend this hotel.

Dear Guest,

I am very happy you found the time to share with us and with TripAdvisor’s community your experience at our BEST WESTERN PREMIER Hotel Sant’Elena. We attach great importance to our guests’ opinion.

Firstly, it is our pleasure you appreciated the courteousness of our front desk staff: our team works exactly to meet your expectations.

Concerning your observations about the room we assigned to you, I would like to specify some points. At the time of the booking, you chose to reserve a single room with a single bed at a convenient price, but at the hotel we can count on several room types that, depending on the case, can satisfy the different needs of our guest. So, you could have chosen between a deluxe room and a junior suite. Or still, once you arrived and did not like your room you could have done your grievances to the staff who would have granted a free upgrade.

Anyway, we are honored you chose our BEST WESTERN PREMIER Hotel Sant’Elena, and we will continue to do our best to be worthy of your selection. We look forward to a future opportunity to better serve your lodging needs.

Best regards,

Francesco La Pietra
