For years we had been dining at La Piscina in Venice. It was always the highlight of our dining experiences, sitting out on the canal in the evening with the white lights twinkling. The servers, looking so elegant in their white jackets, were always attentive and highly professional. The food was fabulous. We couldn't ask for a lovelier experience. The last time we were there was 2006. This year one of the very first things we did upon arrival in Venice was walk over to La Calcina to make a reservation for dinner the following night, looking forward to another wonderful evening. The first thing I noticed is that the servers were in a variety of short or long sleeved white shirts with black pants. Not as elegant as the white jackets, but as long as the food was as great as we remembered it, who cares what the waiters wear? I found the servers to be unfriendly with an attitude of indifference and unfortunately the food was simply mediocre. My scallops were overcooked and chewy and my spinach lasagna looked and tasted like a frozen meal from the supermarket freezer section. My husband's pasta dish was okay and his salmon looked burnt on top but the inside was cold.I had no desire to even try a dessert and we decided to have our coffee elsewhere. What a disappointment! I will be apprehensive about trying it in the future. Can someone please press the rewind button?
