For years we had been dining at La Piscina in Venice. It was always the highlight of our dining experiences, sitting out on the canal in the evening with the white lights twinkling. The servers, looking so elegant in their white jackets, were always attentive and highly professional. The food was fabulous. We couldn't ask for a lovelier experience. The last time we were there was 2006. This year one of the very first things we did upon arrival in Venice was walk over to La Calcina to make a reservation for dinner the following night, looking forward to another wonderful evening. The first thing I noticed is that the servers were in a variety of short or long sleeved white shirts with black pants. Not as elegant as the white jackets, but as long as the food was as great as we remembered it, who cares what the waiters wear? I found the servers to be unfriendly with an attitude of indifference and unfortunately the food was simply mediocre. My scallops were overcooked and chewy and my spinach lasagna looked and tasted like a frozen meal from the supermarket freezer section. My husband's pasta dish was okay and his salmon looked burnt on top but the inside was cold.I had no desire to even try a dessert and we decided to have our coffee elsewhere. What a disappointment! I will be apprehensive about trying it in the future. Can someone please press the rewind button?

This was our best meal in Venice during our four-day stay. Service was attentive and warm, food was to die for and prices were reasonable. I cannot recommend this place enough. The location is very good, down by the harbor, with nice views.

While visiting Venice, we usually stay in a hotel in Mestre, and look for fine osterias in the neighbourhood. There are plenty of them.
Venice however is quite different. It is full of tourist traps, and even in the better ones quality is not stable.
So La Piscina is a discovery. First of all, the location. At the waterfront, even on a terrace build along the Canale della Giudecca. Beautiful, with all the charm of Venice. Quite a romantic place.
And located near the Zattere vaporetto stop, so easily attainable.
The food is excellent, not really gastronomical, but value for money. And the waiters are professional and polite, which cannot be taken for granted in Venice, apparently.
So we had lunch and dinner on the terrace, and we will definitely return. A discovery.

Terrible tourist trap, as many in this city. Of course the view is great, but what you have on your plate is a disaster. I am lucky not to be sick. Service? Is there any?
I put 2 points only for the location. Everything else is to avoid

Had lunch here on consecutive days. The food was good (especially the tagliatelli with lobster) and the service friendly and efficient but it's where it is that makes it so special. the tables are set on a 'pier' built over the water of the Canale della Guidecca outside the Hotel La Calcini which was a house where John Ruskin stayed. This means that one has a view of the water traffic and the Guidecca while enjoying a quieter location away from the bustle of some of the main Venetian thoroughfares.
