“Poor service, grate view”
Reviewed July 22, 2013

I had dinner here with my wife and most of the time we felt unwelcome. Although it took the waiter almost 15 minutes to take our order ( less then 30% of tables were occupied) we insisted on staying due to the great view of.

The staff seemed to always have other business and did not pay much attention to customers.
When asking for some details on the menu we got a the answer in a very quick and almost indistinguishable sequence of words that sounded somehow like English.

The pastas we had were good but the desert didn't have that classy Italian touch, and felt more like a self service restaurant type of desert.

One last detail, the menu is quite poor: a few appetizers, half a dozen main dishes, a dozen meat dishes, 5 or 6 deserts and a big variety of vine.

“Good location, shame about the staff”
Reviewed July 22, 2013

We stayed at La Calcina Hotel for 5 nights for our 50th Wedding Anniversary and location was perfect. The hotel was pretty, but this restaurant let the whole place down. It is in a wonderful setting and only minutes away from the hustle and bustle of major sights so a good place to go. However, the staff, particularly in La Piscina were in the main pretty poor. Very few smiles or acknowledgements before asking what you wanted, and sometimes we had to ask several times for coffee in the morning after which we would have been happy to wait for our breakfast to be served. We were told that breakfast started at 8.00am (earlier inside) but they were never ready to serve until well after that time. As there are no tea or coffee making facilities in the rooms we tried to get a coffee from the small restaurant inside but were told we had to wait. Breakfast is buffet service although strangely coffee and tea isn't, so definite room for improvement.
On our first night we got back to the hotel at just on 10.00pm and as there were still people in the restaurant my husband asked for a whiskey, only to be told they were closed! We mentioned that we were residents and were greeted with a shrug and only when we got up and made our way into the hotel were we offered a drink which we declined - the whole thing leaving a bit of a downer on the evening.
We ate dinner one night and again the service was poor - reaching across people talking, to pick up or replace wine glasses when there was plenty of room to do the job properly. Several non-residents tried to eat and although they were seated we saw two couples get up and walk away as they weren't offered a menu and no staff approached them for some time. Just a general lack of training which was a shame. The food is fine but given there is so much competition it is a bit overpriced for what you got although they are often very full because of the brilliant location.

“Good but not as much as I remembered it”
Reviewed July 21, 2013

Came here the best part of 10 years ago and my recollection was that it was one of the best meals I had ever eaten (a shame I didn't write a tripadvisor review then). Perhaps you should never go back, because it was very good but no, this wasn't another one of the best meals I have ever eaten. It is a great location, on pontoons in the Giudecca Canal off Zattere, looking towards Palladio's Redentore church. The food was good, not as typically Venetian as I remembered it though. For example, my fegato alla Veneziana didn't come with polenta; in fact there wasn't any on the menu. The service was a bit rushed for perfection too. For value, it was about average for Venice, so expensive for almost everywhere else, but I guess that's the price for the location.
