Description: Canova restaurant in the superb Baglioni Hotel Luna in Venice is an exclusive, sophisticated place to enjoy award-winning cuisine. The Hotel itself has history in spades – it was once home to the Knights Templar and has been an albergo since the Middle Ages, reputedly the first hotel in Venice. Sited near the Piazza San Marco at the mouth of the Grand Canal, few hotel restaurants enjoy such a superb setting. The dining room is a haven of soft, Venetian classicism, with wood paneled walls, exquisite table settings, neutral, plush upholstery and fleet, unobtrusive service. The menu is a mixture of Venetian specialties and international favourites. If you are hosting a meeting or private event, the hotel is fully equipped to assist you in every respect.

While hotel restaurants can be hit or miss, the Canova was excellent with Venetian regional specialties. Since we were staying at the Luna Baglioni, we decided to try the Canova our first night as we were travel worn and it was convenient. Service was friendly, efficient, and very helpful with wine selections.

Together with our Chef Cosimo (Apulian origin but Venetian by adoption) we offer have a typical mediterranean cuisine with research and reinterpretation of the ancient recipes of the Doges. Although the service was attentive and friendly, the food was consistently poor and expensive for the quality. The appetiziers were bland. The main courses were literally like fast food- mine was fried and looked like a Long John Silver piece of fish. It only needed the bun.

My wife and I ate here on the first night of our stay at the Luna Baglioni. We had the chefs recommendation deal of three courses with a bottle of wine and what a surprise. The food was quite delicious. We were treated to a complimentary glass of Prosecco while we chose from the menu and then were treated to the most scrumptious King prawns in a filo straw crust as an amuse bouche while waiting – I could quite happily have had several. I then had the most delicious and beautifully cooked breaded escalope of chicken. This was simply done and could very easily have been dry and tasteless and like some sort of fast food affair but it was not. It was perfectly cooked with plenty of flavour, a crisp but light crumb coating with no signs of grease and beautifully tender flavoursome chicken. My wife had some excellently cooked prawn skewers. For desert I had the obligatory Tiramisu, which again was beautifully presented and very tasty, and my wife had an equally delicious selection of sorbets. All this was washed down with a delicious bottle of Pinot Grigio. Others have commented on the price. We had an excellent three course meal with a bottle of wine for 156 Euros which in a restaurant of this standard, in Venice, I thought was quite acceptable. We went out on our second night to another supposedly top Venice restaurant where we had the worst food and pretentious service of our trip and paid 102 Euros for two starters and two glasses of wine. Now the latter IS an overpriced liberty. I cannot say this about the Canova. The service was excellent, suitably friendly but not over familiar, always there if needed but not overbearing. We felt very welcome and were excellently looked after and wished we had eaten here on our second night. We will be back if we return to Venice.

Dear Guest,
We are very happy to learn of your positive experience at the Canova Restaurant, but more over happy to hear that differently to others you positively evaluate the “value for money” of your experience. Others offers are also available with the “Chef suggestion” like the 2 course offer and moreover during the numerous Venetian calendar events we do offer tasting menu of the local tradition. Thank you again for highlighting your personal experience in this forum and hope to have the pleasure to introduce you through another tasting emotion on your next visit. We went there on a Saturday evening in March after a splendid afternoon at the opera. We chose the restaurant on the advice of our travel company. It is a very stylish dining room in a top class hotel. The food was good if overpriced. Not exciting but well cooked and presented. It was expensive and not great value for money. The wine list prices were silly. The service was cool and disinterested. The main problem was that there was only one other table occupied by two people. The result was zero atmosphere. We thought about all the busy buzzy restaurants that we passed on the way here, and knew we had made a mistake.
