“Good Tuscan Cuisine in a Typical "Osteria"”
Reviewed February 12, 2012

The restaurant is located under the arcades of a street near the historical center of Padua, a few steps away from the ancient city walls. The restaurant resembles a typical italian "osteria": pretty small, rocky walls, wooden tables and straw chairs. The atmosphere is pretty warm and the personnel is nice and collaborative. We were offered no printed menus: instead, the waiter listed the available dishes and recommended us some seasonal dishes.

As an "appetizer", we shared a dish of "pici", a typical Tuscan pasta similar to spaghetti (but thicker and coarser), with a sauce made with "guanciale" (lard from the cheek of a pig). They were simply amazing, I wish I had more.

As far as it concerns the main course, we opted for the dish we chose this restaurant for: the "Fiorentina" (beefsteak Florentine style), one of the best known Tuscan dishes. The Florentine beefsteak is a particular cut from a particular breed of cattle, grilled on wood fire and seasoned only with salt and black pepper. Be aware that this particular beef cut is very thick and the beef will be underdone, particularly the innermost layer. I don't believe you can get a well-done steak out of this beef cut, unless you're willing to renounce to all its tenderness. I've often read negative comments about this kind of beefsteak being always underdone: if you don't like underdone meat, you'd better choose another course instead.

The waiter let us choose our steak and we opted for a cut of approximately 1.5 kg that was shared between three persons. The beef was of a very good quality: it was delicious.

The owner of the restaurant was also very nice and asked us about every dish we had. Although we arrived pretty late (in fact, we were worried it was too late), we never felt we were under pressure. On the contrary, the owner let us peacefully finish our dinner even when the restaurant was already empty, and joined us for a casual conversation and the last drink before leaving.

In summary: we had a good dinner, the quality/price ratio was satisfactory and we spent an enjoyable evening with friends in a cozy restaurant.

Good first plates. Awful "vino della casa" (local wine).
