The austere grandeur of this Basilica is breath taking! It has several magnificent courtyards that will instantly give you an unbelievable sense of tranquillity. Even if you are not Catholic, this place is a must see!

I have seen many beautiful and famous churches in Europe and this undoubtedly ranks with the top ones. There are the tacky souvenir shops in the streets outside but inside is to step into a sacred space that combines a spiritual serenity with awe inspiring art and architecture. You cannot take photos inside and this helps to ensure it is less a tourist curiosity and more a place of prayer. Mass was in progress when we visited but we still were permitted to enter and to walk quietly around the outside altars and the altars at the back behind the main altar. Each altar is completely different from the other and the one with San Antonio's tomb shines out with an extraordinary brightness. Church work continues during the mass with one priest offering counselling in one of the side altars and a monk diligently cleaning in another. This church is definitely worth a visit. I am so pleased that I did.

Never have I seen a basilica or cathedral so full of art -- not a square inch of empty space, it seems. But it's tasteful and fascinating.

I loved this place even though some of the devotional stuff is a bit much. There was a Franciscan monk there who just gave blessings to those who asked. I asked and felt overcome by his goodness and warm heartedness. I'll never forget it.
