How often do you get to have a cocktail in a medieval piazza, with a light breeze and perfect light?

The best time to visit the P. dei Signori is as dusk falls. The square's tables and chairs become filled with young (and more mature) Padovani talking, laughing and enjoying their spritzes, musicians busk and street vendors ply their wares, the ice-cream shops do a roaring trade and taxis and scooters wend their way through the groups of merry-makers. It is THE place to while away an hour or two before or after eating (at, we would recommend, the Rosso Pomodoro). We like the free crisps that accompany the reasonably priced drinks, the lack of pressure on spending more than the cost of one drink and the (apparent) lack of concern over how long you sit with your one drink, even if it is just a bottle of water. Incidentally' a Spritz (made with Aperol) is the typical aperitivo of Padua and, having a somewhat sharp tang, is an (readily in my case) acquired taste! We found the little ice-cream shop two doors away from the Grom outlet to serve bigger, better and cheaper than its illustrious neighbour. If you want to sample the true Italian life, then this is the place to go in Padua!

There is lots of history in the Piazza de Signori. The large clock tells the day/time/month and year and it also has the ancient horoscopes on it. There is also a large statue in the square of a lion with a sword and a book - you will have to ask someone what it means. Very cool.

Very good ice cream (gelato) place in this square called Grum. Its great for people with allergies because they have all the ingredients posted. They have non dairy ice cream also. Fairly expensive as far as gelato goes though.

On the weekends you will find a big market in here, lots of inexpensive goods.

At night - this is were the fun begins. All the university students (thousands) meet here to drink and laugh before heading to the dance clubs. Bests nights to join this fun are wednesdays, fridays and saturdays.

As in all places in Padova (and the world), do not travel alone past dark. Always be careful. There is a heavy population of Moroccans gangs who are selling stolen bikes + drugs and stealing - like people do all over the world.

The large space so well preserved with the interesting buildings on all sides. Colorful marketplace. Cafes. It is still a central pedestrial place as in older times.
