“Family ski holiday”
Reviewed April 9, 2012

We are a family of 6 (4 children between 10 - 16) and have just had an excellent week in Courmayeur staying at the Del Viali. The rooms were very comfortable and fresh towels and room tidied/beds made every day. The staff were fantasic, especially when our fussy children did not always want what they had ordered to eat - there were happy to get them something else and generally made a fuss of them. The overall feeling we had was that they wanted to make the stay as enjoyable as possible. We stayed half board and the food was good - not exceptional cuisine, but ideal for hungry skiiers. The hotel itself is really interesting with lots of unusual furniture and pictures and certainly has character. It is about 10 minutes level walk from the centre of town and only 20 minutes from the gondola walking, but there is a free shuttle service to the main gondola as well. We would not hesitate to go again and recommend this to families.

Unfortunately Chef Alessandro's cooking at Hotel del Viale was so good that I put on 1.5 kg in one week - in spite of skiing every day. The pastas were superb, the bracciola and cotoletta tender and the wines divine. Forever smiling Mariangela and Monica were top professionals, always attentive - making dinner-dates a social occasion. Coffee-machine turned out excellent coffees/cappucinos and was very popular with queues forming - another one at busy breakfast times would be an improvement. Room # 53 on the 1st Floor was warm, comfortable and always clean. (TV may need updating to one with a larger screen.) Marco the driver ferrying us to ski-lifts was always prompt, courteous and helpful.

Picking a hotel is often a gamble but this was definitely one that worked. We did email before we went and think that this made a difference to the room we were allocated, as we were apparently privileged with a bath & shower and a good sized room with balcony. Some others did not have a bath and this was a source of much jealousy. The place would benefit with a little updating but it did not detract from our enjoyment. The restaurant was good with a varied menu. My other half is a vegetarian and the chef was very accommodating with choices not on the menu. Our waitress (Maria) deserves special mention as she was always smiling and helpful. The hotel runs a bus to and from the cable car which was really helpful as it is situated on the other side of town and a bit of a trek in ski boots. However, it is only a short walk (10 mins) to the main street. The town is very nice and not a concrete jungle like some resorts. Although a limited amount of bars there is ample entertainment for most. It would probably not suit youngsters looking for buzzing nightlife. We travelled with Crystal and the reps were very good and visible throughout the week should any problems occur. The day trip to Pila was well worth it, as the skiing at Courmayeur is a bit limited. The discount card that Crystal offer is probably not good value, unless one is going to use the restaurants. The ski hire was easy and equipment can be left on the mountain so there is no need to lug everything up & down each day. We had a great time and were also lucky with the weather.

A warm and friendly hotel. Comfortable and traditional but quite unique and eclectic in terms of furnishings and decoration in the public areas - and all the better for it! It's certainly out of the ordinary.
All of the very hardworking staff and owners were exceptionally pleasant and helpful. Breakfasts and dinners were very good. Public areas were very comfortable as was our bedroom - and everywhere was spotlessly clean. In a very cold week there was plenty of heating available and lashings of hot water.
A good 15-20 minutes walk to the cable car was easily avoided using the hotel's very convenient shuttle bus - so overcoming any location issue.
I would return on another trip to the resort and that is the true test of how much I liked it!

Room Tip: best to ask for a room with a bath in the en-suite

Just returned from a fabulous week in Courmayeur. The hotel was lovely. This was our first Crystal holiday and we were very impressed all round. The resort reps were brilliant and the transfers to and from the resort all went smoothly. Crystal offered a lot of activities daily which included guided skiing, snow shoe walks and evening activities.
Very traditional and cozy. The Italian speaking staff were delightful and extremely helpful.
We couldn't fault it. We stayed in room no. 2 which was very nice. Ample space in bathroom with plenty of decent sized towels. The sheets were crisp and clean. I think some people had rooms that were a bit spartan and also some complained of low ceilings on the attic floor. Would request this room again. The hotel provided a shuttle service to and from the lifts each day and also to to and from the bus stop in town if you wished to venture further afield. It was a good 10 minute walk to the town centre but all relatively flat and easy even in the snowiest of conditions. The food at the hotel was simple but there was plenty of it. A buffet breakfast with a variety of cold meats and cheeses and hardboiled eggs or croissant and cakes and fresh bread. Also cereals yoghurts and jams. Supper was a 5 course affair served at the table (apart from the self service salad bar). Salad, choice of starter, choice of pasta course then choice of main course and choice of dessert. The food was simple but good, nothing out of this world. Lots of good mountain restaurants in the resort. The Petit Mont Blanc on the Zerotta run offers can be booked for evening dinner and they will collect you on a snow mobile and take you back at the end of the evening.

Room Tip: Avoid the attic floor as ceilings were low. We stayed in room No. 2 which was very nice

Just got back from a fantastic weeks skiing in Courmayeur, staying at the Del Viale.
A very friendly Hotel with a rather interesting range of rooms. We were a group of 9 people with a mix of couples and singles and ended up with accomodation that could have slept 12 comfortably! Some of the rooms had low ceilings and all had small bathrooms, but everything was very clean and pleasing to the eye. Food was average, but good for the price. Staff in the restaurant and bar were fantastic and friendly.
It's 10 - 15 mins walk into town or 15 - 20 mins walk to the lifts (choice of 2). But Marco, the very friendly barman drives the minibus to and from the lift in the morning and afternoon every half hour so transport was no problem.
We hired skis and boots from a shop at the top of the main cable car and this is where we left them overnight. This meant that in the evening we could catch the lift down and walk, comfortably, through the town in normal shoes. Calling in at one of the bars that offer a free post ski buffet if you have a drink there.
Overall the resort and Hotel were better than our expectations.

Room Tip: Ask to see the room, they all vary so much.
