We just arrived from our skiing holiday from Cervinia. We stayed two weeks in this lovely hotel first week with our grandchildren. The location of this hotel is perfect. Just few steps from the Cretaz lift station. The owners of the hotel the Zanetti family really know how to make their quests feel welcome and happy during the whole stay. We have stayed in this hotel for many times and it feels almost like coming to visit good friends when we arrive.
The rooms are comfortable and kept very clean mornigns and evenings. If you choose this hotel, which I higly recommend, be sure to take the half pension as the food is just out of this
world. The only thing that one can complain about the food is that you cannot eat all the wonderful things they serve you, so much. Even our grandchildren 6 and 11 years love it.

Definetely the Best in Cervinia.

worle.

Room Tip: We had a family room number 301 with a wiev towards Matterhorn. Lovely.

We have just returned from a week in a Superior room at the Excelsior Planet, and whilst I agree with all the fantastic comments about the wonderful evening meals and the lovely staff, I did have a few gripes. The main one being that our room stank, I mean absolutely ponged, of cigarette smoke. We complained to reception who asked the maid to air our room each day and there were a few feeble attempts with air-freshener, but it didn't really do the job and it made the room quite unpleasant to return to. We had to wash all of our clothes when we returned home, even the ones that we hadn't worn because of the problem.
The jacuzzi bath didn't work at all, neither did the bathroom fan.
However, the great evening meals were a real treat and Tito and Gaspero looked after us particularly well. Breakfast less impressive, and the hotel definitely need more toasters. They could also improve by serving bread other than the cheap dry very square stuff, and fresh fruit rather than just a few tinned peaches and prunes. Perhaps this is to put people off filling their pockets with their daily supply for the slopes! From asking around, I do think that this is probably one of the best hotels in Cervinia, and the location is fantastic. If it hadn't been for our slightly tatty room we would have been very happy indeed.
One last thing, if you interpret a "fitness centre" as being a gym, it isn't! I know that it sounds ridiculous to need one whilst on a skiing holiday, but we are marathon training and it has become (temporarily) a big part of life and we picked this hotel for the reason that it had a gym

We had a family skiing holiday (3 generations) based at Excelsior Planet. It was our 5th stay and we shall be back again next year.

It is very convenient for the slopes (about 40m) ski hire shop & ski school. They also offer an on-demand minbus service to/from the gondola at the other end of town.

Dinner is a real tour de force with outstanding service and a stunning wine list. I would agree with another reviewer that while the breakfast is good, it is not as impressive as the evening meal. The lounge area (serviced by the bar man) is very relaxing with a real open fire and occasional live music. Reception and management staff are very pleasant, helpful and welcoming without being OTT. The night porter (a Scotsman) is a real character.

Room Tip: Avoid 215/315 (& prob 115) - they are made smaller to accomodate the lift shaft. OK as single ro...

Stayed here Feb 2012 half term, so resort was busy. Staff were very friendly and welcoming and sorted out lift passes and airport transfers for us. The hotel is about 20 yards from the chair lifts and about the same distance in the other direction to the bars and restaurants. We found a few really nice places for meals and apres ski which was great.

Other reviewers have mentioned the fantastic food at evening meals and I have to say they are spot on. A selection of food during our one week stay was caviar, truffles, home made chips, fresh tuna, smoked salmon, amazing crab, prawns, clams and mussels, dumplings, risotto, tender lamb/veal and fresh pasta. The problem was there was too much to eat! They have an excellent chef and this is definitely the highlight of the hotel. Breakfast doesn't quite live up up to the same standard, but its still decent. We took our ten year old son and had a great time. The view from our room balcony of the Matterhorn and piste was excellent (see photos). Free wi-fi was very welcome. If I'm being picky, there are three minor things the hotel could do better: 1) the reception/bar design isn't very welcoming - needs a re-fit; 2) we found that smoke from the open fire in the lounge area wasn't very well vented, which meant that our clothes wouldn't smell very nice at the end of each evening; and 3) they charged 10 euros per person to use the pool / sauna area. This put us off using it as we only ever wanted a half hour swim. They need to make this complimentary. These are minor issues though and overall I'd definitely recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the Matterhorn.

We spent a week skiing in Cervinia and can highly recommend this hotel. The location is perfect, being just a few steps from the chair lifts, which link with the rest of the resort. The restaurant is the star of the show, providing sumptuous 5-course evening meals, with plenty of choice. The dining room staff could not have been more attentive. The other staff in the hotel are also fantastic - really helpful and friendly. There is a really comfortable lounge / sitting area with an open fire and the bar prices are surprisingly reasonable, on a par with the non-hotel bars in the resort. The rooms are serviced twice daily and are spotlessly clean. Each room is allocated two heated lockers in the ski/boot room and there are spare lockers for those with more than two guests per room. The room is in the basement and there is a lift to take you up to street level. It would have been nice to have tea/coffee making facilities in the room, but I don't recall ever having that in any skiing hotel.

A word on Cervinia: a great lift system with no queues, but definitely not a resort for advanced skiers. The slopes are very gentle and there is nothing challenging. We were unable to get across to Zermatt due to two days of white-out conditions and several days of very high winds. If you want some gentle cruising and confidence-building, this is the resort for you.

We had a standard room at the third floor. The rooms are typical hotel rooms, we would have liked more alpine style...but expectations were compensated by many other positive aspects. The room is anyhow warm, spacious enough, have a balcony , free wifi and Sky TV. Staff is very friendly and helpful. The hotel is in a good position , at 2 min walk from the main street but not facing it (it actually faces Mount Cervino /Matterhorn) and therefore more silent. Very nice tea hall with the cheminée in the center... The restaurant is very good, the buffet dessert is an apotheosis of delight.

Excelsior Planet

Fantastic Location, Michelin Quality Food, Friendly Helpful Staff, Very Clean, Family atmosphere with character, not one of those plastic faceless hotels.

We have stayed several time at this hotel and it's great staying at such a friendly hotel only 50yds from the slopes and great lift system.

My wife was ill the previous year and the family allowed the payment, which had been made in full, to be used this year. Not something you get from 99% of hotels.

The Reception
Chiaxe Zanetti is part of the family and could not be more helpful as could her staff Sara and Tania. (There was a report moaning about Elise the blond receptionist which was really unfair as she has also always been helpful)
The Restaurant
The food is brilliant at Dinner, thoroughly deserving the Michelin recommendation. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff. Plenty of choice and puts to shame some 'high cost' London restaurants.
For an Italian Hotel the breakfasts improve every year and there is more than enough food of a good self service quality including Bacon and Egg if you want it!!
The Wine
The Sommelier Matteo Zanetti is also part of the family and always chooses great wines but never the expensive ones, a sommelier to trust!! He is also very helpful in terms of helping to plan trips to other parts of Italy, and the good vineyards to visit!!

The Bedrooms
We normally have a Junior Suite which gives us a bath for a good soak after ski-ing and also some space to relax. The rooms with a view of the Matterhorn are best!
The Spa
Whilst it is small the family have spent a lot of money improving the facilities and it is now more than adequate for most people, with a small pool, jacuzzi, Steam Room, Sauna, and also treatments.
Lounge and Cocktail Bar
The seats are comfy and the service from Cice is superb. Once he knows your tipple you don't have to keep saying, and also none of this sign here all the time for drinks, and no mistakes on the bill.
The art on display is quirky or eclectic depending on your views but I think it adds to the character as a family hotel and not a plastic bore!!
Thoroughly recommend this hotel and the lovely people running it!!
