Location is very good, only one block back from the slopes.
Rooms are adequate and clean. They were very warm and we had difficulty sleeping as we couldn't regulate the temperature without opening the balcony/veranda door and freezing. Our shower was quite a snug fit and we are not large people by any means.
The food was thought to be pretty good by most of our group but there was VERY little choice for vegetarians. Although the service was generally excellent, for the veggies, the chefs would only cook some pasta with a sauce and expected all the veggies to have the same. Unfortunately, that meant pasta with tomato sauce most nights. Some nights the temperature in the restaurant reached 30°C, which was also a bit uncomfortable.

I probably wouldn't stay there again, but wouldn't say no if it was the cheapest or only available option. However, if you are a skinny meat eater that likes a warm bedroom and restaurant.......go for it.

Where do I begin? We chose Cervinia because of the reports we'd read about the long, wide runs which are great for beginners and early-intermediates. On that point we were not disappointed. Cervinia, as a ski resort, is wonderful.

However, I want to concentrate on the Punta Maquignaz ("PM"), which was a series of disappointments all the way. We had to wait over an hour for our bags to arrive, which were dumped outside the hotel. Not totally the fault of the PM (this was down to Crystal Ski); however, the PM reception could have informed us our bags were there.

The meals were rather hit or miss. On the occasions when the food was good, it was excellent. However, most of the time, we found the food inedible - very disappointing after a long days skiing. The service was terrible with down-trodden, sour faced staff very rarely cracking a smile. We were not alone in this opinion, which we discovered when we got chatting to an English party of four and a Swedish family who agreed.

The owners chose to redecorate part of the breakfast area half way though our stay in peak season, which resulted in us being herded into a very small area to have breakfast. Breakfast in itself was a very uninspiring and limited affair with no offer of any hot food, often served with warm juice and if you got there after 9 am (breakfast was served until 9.30am), there was little left to pick over.

The wellness area was OK, but it would have been nice if there had been robes provided. I didn't enjoy wandering through the hotel in just a swimming costume and towel wrapped around me.

The ski boot room was small and to get to it from the outside, you had to go to a dark, dingy garage, passing piles of laundry and crates of empty beer bottles. Not good considering this is a "four star" hotel.

The ultimate insult came when the owners of the hotel sat in the restaurant and smoked cigarettes despite the fact that smoking in public places has been banned in Italy since January 2005! We mentioned this to one of the more approachable staff who told us that the owners did not care and as a result, the staff did not care either. This pretty much sums up the whole sorry affair of a hotel.

We are hoping to go back to Cervinia on our next ski holiday. We met some fabulous people and loved the skiing. However, we most definitely will not be staying at the Punta Maquignaz.

The Punta Maq is situated at the top of the high street in Cervinia which is ideal for the ski lifts, restaurants and shopping in the evenings. However - the hotel lets itself down on one point - the cosy bar in the basement appears to be the meeting point for the locals until the very small hours.......I would normally not think this a problem (in fact I'd often be down there with them) except there appears to be no area of the hotel where you can't hear the party. If you have an early start to catch a flight then don't bank on getting a lot of sleep the night before!

Starting with the plus points, the Punta Maquignaz is well-situated at the top of the main pedestrian street in the centre of Cervinia. The hotel is clad in wood and is more attractive than most of its neighbours. The hotel is only one block away from the foot of the slopes and even wearing boots and carrying skis it takes less than 5 minutes to walk from the boot room to the excellent, new Cretaz lift. We were there over New Year 07/08 yet there were never any queues or delays at the lifts so getting up the mountain was a breeze.
The rooms at the hotel were a good size for a ski hotel. I have been used to places where there is hardly any space to put your ski gear when you get back from the slopes but our room was generously proportioned. The bathroom had a reasonably sized bath (good for a soak after a day on the slopes) with an efficient shower for the mornings. The interior decoration will not win any awards but is reasonable enough.
So far, so good. The PM has one very serious (although possibly avoidable) drawback: the service in the restaurant. When we booked we were given no option but to stay on a half board basis. This may have been because it was New Year week. Half board guests are consigned to a restaurant in the basement (rather than the more pleasant ground floor restaurant). The subterranean location is the least of the problems. The service is almost comically bad. The set menu offered 4 courses but as it took approximately an hour for each course to arrive I doubt many guests ever had the patience to have each course. Total chaos reigned amongst the waiting staff. If one wasn't hungry after a day on the slopes their attempts to serve flaming prawns without setting fire to themselves would probably have been entertaining. The food, when it turned up, was generally quite good but by that stage that was almost beside the point. We ended up eating elsewhere for 4 or our 7 nights which was an extra expense but at least meant that our holiday was not blighted by the restaurant of doom...
Cervinia is a great place for intermediate skiiers. Do go and by all means stay at the PM but don't go on a half board basis.

I must say that having read the previous review I am a little shocked as our experience was somewhat different.

My partner and i also had a Junior Suite and we were also a little disappointed that there was only a very small shower in the room, in fact the shower room was so tiny it was very difficult to dry yourself in the shower room.

We never used the spa facilities so i cannot comment on the cost although I do know that these facilities are also used by there sister hotel.

We were a group of 4 in two rooms. We also arrived unannounced yet we had no issues in getting 2 rooms. They had one room ready and, due to the fact the another client was coming down the stairs with a broken leg and had decided to cancel the remainder of their holiday, we were able to move in their room that afternoon.
We had no issues regarding settling the bill at the end of the holiday.

We found the hotel to be quiet generally, the food in the downstairs restaurant was fabulous.

All in all, with our experience i would and will stay at this hotel again. I know that I can put up with a small bathroom bearing in mind the length of time that we spend in the hotel anyway.

I stayed at this hotel for a week with some friends. We were delighted to find a 4 star hotel available at short notice and booked direct with the hotel for a week. When we arrived we were shocked to find that none of our bathrooms had baths. We were never told that this would be the case and definately did not expect it as the room was called a junior suite. We also specifically chose this hotel because it had a spa but little did we know that every time we wanted to use it we had to pay, even though we were guests of the hotel and one evening it was closed for no reason.

The biggest shock was when we went to check out and one of our party who had spent the week alone was charged a 30% supplement on top of her bill. When we had booked we were also not told about this and we were then presented with a Thomson holiday contract. Understandably we were surprised as we had booked independantly thus their arrangement did not apply to us. After a long and rather frustrating conversation with the manager they chose to accept absolutely no responsibility and simply told us that we could pay the full amount or not pay at all and that they would call the police. I have never seen or heard of customers being treated so badly, therefore this is why I'm writing on this website to urge you to think very carefully before staying in this hotel and learn from our horrendous experience.
