The recently renovated Hotel Bus, rebranded as the HB Aosta, in the centre of lovely Aosta provides very comfortable accommodation. The rooms are extremely nice containing brand new flat screen TVs and a very modern, minimalist look and feel which works. This feel doesn't transfer quite so easily to the bar and, in particular, to the restaurant where the lighting is far too bright and the room lacks atmosphere and ambiance. It is rather like eating in a Doctors waiting room. The Hotel really made an effort on New Year’s eve with candles and a special menu but for some unknown reason the lights were turned up full blast half way through the meal. The food on the whole is disappointing. It was average at best on our visit and poor at worst. So much so that we chose to eat out on the last three nights to sample some better food in a better atmosphere. The wine list is also a disgrace. Given the plethora of excellent local Aosta wines, (let only Italian wines) to list just 4 or 5 bottles each of white and red wine on one side of A5 paper is disappointing to say the least. Even more so when there is so little information provided. The list of red wines simply states nebbiolo, pinot noir, dolcetto, tourette etc- no indication of producer, region or vintage. I may be a bit of a wine bore but really even in more basic establishments in Aosta you find far superior and detailed wine lists. Breakfast is adequate but lacks that extra something that you get in many other Hotels in the Aosta valley. There is also a brand new spa area which we did not use mainly due to the additional cost. The location of the Hotel Bus is excellent just a stroll in to the atmospheric old town and a 15 minute walk to the lift. This is the main reason to stay here. If available, I would happily stay here again on a bed and breakfast basis and eat out in the old town each night at the many excellent restaurants. However, if the HB has any aspirations about being THE place to stay in Aosta it really has to improve its dining room experience.
