We sought out this little Restaurant tucked away just behind one of the main streets in Aosta after reading reviews on Trip advisor, as it seemed to be the type of establishment in which we are comfortable, offering good value interesting food. Yet again Trip Advisor reviewers came up trumps.

On our first night in Aosta we arrived for dinner without a reservation just after they opened and already there were a number of diners installed. However we were greeted very warmly and were fortunate enough to get a table for 2 immediately. Our waitress was really kind and friendly, and although she did not speak much English, and our Italian leaves a lot to be desired, with the aid of a menu with English translations, and a lot of smiles we were able to order and enjoy a beautifully prepared and tasty meal in pretty and interesting surroundings. Service throughout was excellent despite a crowded restaurant.

We were planning to visit another recommended restaurant on our 2nd and final evening in Aosta, but it turned out that this was the one day of the week when they were closed. So no contest - we returned to Osteria dell'Oca, again without a reservation, but this time before opening time. Again we were lucky and again welcomed warmly, only this time it was clear that we had been remembered from the previous night and it was almost as though we were old friends. Another delightful meal ensued although my wife could not complete her main course as the helping was too big!

For those who, like me, did not previously know the word "Oca" it is "goose", and the decor of the restaurant is goose themed, which gives it a slight quirkiness. However the meals are truly the "Golden Egg"; well-cooked, tasty and excellent value. The whole experience was an absolute delight.

We had lunch here and we found it quite disappointing considering all the rave reviews. The service was slow and disorganized. Once we were seated, we noticed people that sat down after us were served first. There appeared to be not enough servers for the amount of tables, however, the servers were quite apologetic. It took over 10 minutes just to get water for our table. Some of us ordered pizza, which arrived 20 minutes before the appetizers even arrived for the rest of us.
The pizza was very good-light thin crust, tasty toppings. The pastas were average and quite oily.

On a rainy day we crossed over from Switzerland looking for some genuine Italian food and ambiance. We found exactly that at Osteria dell'Oca in Aosta. The Osteria is located in a small square off the main street, a good thing as it is away from the more tourist driven eateries that line it.
We sat on the covered terrace along with the majority of the customers, protected from the intermittent showers. The welcome was friendly and the setting very much what we were looking for, a genuine Italian Osteria. The menu has a huge selection of pizzas ( at least 30cm across for information! ) and one of our sons chose the Diavola. Our other son had raviolini and ragu sauce which was also a copious serving. We had rabbit with polenta, and also veal with raddichio and potatoes. Dessert was a fantastic chocolate Tarte with peach jam in the middle, exactly what was needed on a rainy day. The kids shared some delicious lemon gellato and fresh fruit. We had a half bottle of Piemonte red which we chose from a well stocked list, full of regional specialities and delights from further afield in Italy. Coffee was Italian and short, a great hit! All told we paid 73 euros for the meal. We were served reasonably quickly, and there was no impression that they wanted us to leave quickly. The waitresses were busy but polite with our attempts at speaking Italian.
I would recommend this Osteria to anyone who is looking for genuine Italian food at good prices with a great ambiance. A telling sign was that there were as many if not more Italians eating than tourists. We will definitely return here on our next visit to the beautiful Aosta region, as well as to the nearby Les Cretes vineyard in nearby Aymavilles.

In the 15 years that we've been visiting Aosta, l'Osteria has become a fixed value for us.

The get to choose from decent pizza but above all some excellent traditional dishes for realy reasonable prices.

OK, if you realy want true gastronomy it's better to drive into the mountains and eat in Cogne (Lou Bequet, Lou Ressignon) or at Le Clusaz just before the Grand St. Bernard.

But for lunch whilst visiting Aosta, don't hesitate and come to L'osteria.

We visited this restaurant 2 years ago even twice and then it seemed to be the best in the region. Probably this time we expected too much, but our expectations were not met. The food was quite avarage, but not bad. The service was not very fast. The restaurant was almost full and there was only one girl (the same as 2 years ago!) who was doing everything! I can't understand how she can do all this job. We took the mixes salad wich was funny small (comparing to regular italian mix salad), the onion soup (the good one) and french snails in mint sause (seemed to be better 2 years ago). We also took 2 desserts and 1 more main course (don't remember which one) and the total was about 40 Eur, so the prices are still quite fair. Many people take pizza, but we decided to eat the normal food:)
