Owner description: The Buonconsiglio Castle is the largest and most important monumental complex of the Trentino Alto Adige region. It was the residence of the prince-bishops of Trento from the 13th century to the end of the 18th century, and is composed of a series of buildings of different eras, enclosed by walls and positioned slightly higher than the city. Castelvecchio is the oldest nucleus, dominated by an imposing cylindrical tower; the Magno Palazzo is the 16th century expansion in the Italian Renaissance-style as commissioned by the Prince-Bishop and Cardinal Bernardo Cles (1485-1539); the Baroque-style Giunta Albertiana dates from the end of the 17th century. At the extreme south of the complex is the Torre Aquila, within which is conserved the famous Cycle of the Months, one of the most fascinating secular pictorial cycles of the late Middle Ages.

Sheer size seemed daunting at first, but the organisation and information of artifacts become increasingly effective as you make your way through the labyrinth of rooms, courtyards, stairways and galleries. Make sure that you take the special tour of the paintings of the 11 months of the year, complete with audio-guide - well worth 1 0r 2 Euros extra - the culmination & highlight of the visit - allow time for extensive walking (1-2 hours) - ideal on a rainy day - good cafe.

Trento is a beautiful city! Worth visiting. The Castello was amazing-especially the frescos of the months in the Torre Aquila. Several very different exhibitions were on view and were very well organised. The staff were all friendly and welcoming. I love this place and could have stayed for hours.

The Castello del Buonconsiglio, in beautiful Trento, has many treasures, but the most remarkable is the wonderful cycle of frescos of the Four Seasons in the Torre Aquila. The eleven pictures of the months of the year (one set has been lost) were painted around 1400 by an unknown artist and restored in the Sixteenth Century. They give an almost unique picture of the medieval year and landscape as we see elegant lords and ladies playing with snowballs, sowing and harvest and, of course, the ever important cuvée as the grapes are harvested and made into wine. The important aristocracy are shown as not only more important but also larger than the peasants who till the soil and raise the crops and manage the livestock- there is an excellent audioguide which draws your attention to many fascinating details. If you want to know how the medieval world and landscape looked and how it depended on those 'smaller' people who farmed the fertile soils of Italy, you can go nowhere better.
