“Charming northern Italian piazza”
Review of Piazza Duomo

Piazza Duomo
Reviewed July 13, 2012

Trento is a university town and there are plenty of polite young people in the piazza, having drinks and chatting. Only a few of those there spoke English but most of the waiters and attendants in the larger shops did, however.

The Hotel Venezia is right on Piazza Duomo and the art on the exterior of the buildings in the Piazza Duomo are amazing to see!

Delightful typical Piazza dominated by the duomo and Trento's encircling mountains. It is a pedestrian area. Of particular note are:
1. The fountain of Neptune with his trident
2. The Via Belenzani, running Northwards, which has the most amazing frescoed buildings dating back to the Council of Trent (early 16th century)
3. The GROM gelateria

Beautiful frescoes, chapels and lots of history, especially the older parts of the church.

Have spent a year in Trento, and this piazza, under the varying light of the seasons is lovely. The fountain of Neptune (Il tridente) is beautiful under the evening light, and is lit well at night. The Bishop's Place and Tower complete the east side, and are quite harmonious with the Duomo to the south. The cafes are a nice place for an apero in the late afternoon, and gelato (Grom) is open late into the evening. Will miss it.
