This place is packed by the way. The prices are amazing for Bolzano. 1/2 liter of house wine was only 4,40 euro, and meals were only 10-15 euro. Had the goulash and polenta, wife was happy with her spaghetti carbanara. Advertised homemade tiramisu which was less than 4 euro and tasted great. Waitress spoke German, English, and Italian fluently and was very friendly. If it makes a difference, the cooks were neither of those three (can see them through the service door). No coperto crap or service fees either.

This restaurant filled in when our tour group could not be accommodated elsewhere. The wine soup and the ravioli primi were outstanding and worth a return visit. Unfortunately, the main course consisted of three or four kinds of pork, with a heavy bacon crusted dumpling. The dishes we saw in the dining room coming through looked and smelled delicious, so a platter o' pork was a let-down.

I always go here when im in Bozen, good size portions and plenty to choose from, sometimes a little slow and the staff are always rushed off their feet, can get very busy but it adds to the atmosphere, would recommend.

On a recent business trip to Bolzano, I was searching for a restaurant I ate at a few years back, which I learned had since closed. I was attracted to the Weisse Roessl Restuarant first by its traditional and rustic decor and some of the items listed on the posted menu at the entrance.

Being the middle of the week, I was suprised to find Weisses Roessl packed and quite busy. It was a good indication that perhaps the food was good. The environment was noisy as waiters and waitresses rushed around taking orders and delivered dishes. Service was timely, professional though lacked in personality. There really was no time for much social interaction as they were working hard.

Most all of the traditional hearty dishes from from the Southern Tirol area were on the menu, mixed in with some standard Italian first and second courses. You can count on flavorful soups to start out with, or a mixed platter of speck and local cheeses. I had smoked pork chops served with sauerkraut and a bread dumpling which was tasty. My colleague had the pork medallions which were served swimming in a flavorful gravy. For dessert we had the warm apple strudel served with ice cream which was one of the best strudels I've eaten in this region.

Prices were very reasonable which may have contributed to Weisses Roessl's popularity. I will return in the future.

In italian it is called "Il cavallino bianco", and the correct street name is Bindergasse.
Bolzano / Bozen is a perfectly bilingual city (Italian / German).
The place is one of the oldest bier restaurant of the city. Very nice food from the traditional Tirol cuisine. That is common in all the socalled Mitteleuropa, and has not much to do with Italian cuisine. I would recommend the Wienerschnitzel, the potato salad and a piece of strudel cake. Bier is also very nice and produced in the Tirol region.
The place is often very busy and some queueing may occurr, but it won't be long and it is worth. A complete dinner may be around 15 euros.
