I read the reviews and chose this hotel for my family. It worked out well partly because I knew it would be a walk to town (which was very nice) and because the setting was very pretty.
Pros
Good food, beautiful location, the walks are a great excuse to justify a gelato every day. Also, the bed was comfortable.
Cons
Distance from town means must use a taxi if the walks are not realistic for some people, narrow road is a challenge to safely walk before getting to the pretty path to
town, the room was minimal, wifi was only in the lobby.
The family was efficient and very busy working. I respect that although it was not a vacation ambience sometimes which would have been better.

We were in Bolzano during the first major snowfall of the winter and were lucky enough to stay in Hotel Hanny, which is just a 15 minute walk away from the center but with good views of the surrounding mountains and to get there you have a very nice walk along the river which after the snowfall was an even more magic walk.

As mentioned the hotel is a short walk from the city center but because of it has good views of the surrounding mountains which the hotels in the center do not have. This is the main reason why we picked this hotel over the others, and it turned out to be a good choice. The service was welcoming, breakfast was heavenly with fresh German yoghurt, fresh bread, apfelstrudel, various cheeses and fruit and the rooms were nice and being at the front of the building we had great views of the area around us.

We will definitely try to come back here in the summer to enjoy the walks which are plenty considering there are several cable cars that bring you up the mountains with the San Genesio/Jenesien one only a 5/10 minute walk away.

This lovely hotel is a ways from the city center and you can consider that a plus. Tucked above the city and into the peaceful hillside, you have the most extraordinary green views. In front of you hills, off to the side is the castle and to the other side, city lights.
After our first venture to the city center, we were quite pleased with our choice of Hotel Hanny. We spent 3 nights. The location may look far from it all, but Bolzano is an accommodating city, providing 20+ km of riverside trails that will lead you anywhere you want to go. The walk to town is easy, maybe taking somewhere between 10-20 minutes depending on your stride. It's a beautiful walk, so there's no rush. And along the way you can stop for a drink in the park or even take in a game of mini-golf!!! If you are too tired to walk back, all the taxis knew Hotel Hanny, so no problem hailing a cab. The tram to San Genesio is less than a 10 minute walk away... We were sad to miss breakfast after our first jet-lagged night since it was an incredible spread of great breads and homemade jams and streudel as well as a fine selection of meats and cheeses. We were even sadder that we did not try dinner in the restaurant though we did manage to squeeze in dessert and should you stay at Hanny, make sure to order the Zwetschgenknodel (spelling??)... I still think about it every day!!! It's magic rolled up into a potato ball. Sounds strange, but it is a delicate explosion of flavor and texture!! I'm going to start its fan club!! HA!!! The rooms are spotless and the linens were clean, white and comfortable. You can count on great sleep at the hotel as every night was silent and serene.

We stayed for 5 nights at Hotel Hanny early in June, 2010 and had a most pleasant time.

Hotel Hanny is set on a hillside among extensive vineyards on the outskirts of the mid-sized town of Bolzano (Bozen in German) in the Bolzano-Bozen province of Northern Italy. The hotel is a small, family-run (by Margot and Karl Riegler) establishment that looks as though it has been extensively renovated over the last several years.

We arrived at Hanny by car and found that there was ample parking available in two outside parking areas and one secure garage, which was located under the front terrace of the hotel. We made a slight mistake in giving back the rental car the day after we arrived as it meant it was most convenient for us to eat in the hotel restaurant each evening rather than walk into town, though this turned out to be not such a big deal.

Bolzano is at the foot of the Dolomite mountains on the main railway line leading from Italy into Austria and then Southern Germany. The drive North from Bolzano, across the Brenner Pass and into Austria is quite spectacular and well worth doing, though on this occasion we had planned to do the trip by train. The drive North to Innsbruck via the SS508 road, which runs along the valley directly opposite the hotel, and over the Samtal Alps is said to be delightful, but as it is very high it doesn't open until late June so we couldn't give it a try this time.

Hotel Hanny is very clean, and the rooms are large, light, bright, spacious and nicely furnished. As far as we could see, all rooms have a balcony. Our room was at the front of the hotel and from the balcony we overlooked a maze of vineyards directly across the valley, with the city centre to the left and the Samtal valley running North to the right. We weren't able to see the view from a back room, but it may be a bit more mundane than the one we had. The city centre is about a 15-20 minute walk away along the very pleasant promenade that runs alongside the river.

The hotel has an excellent buffet breakfast each day, though it possibly won't satisfy those who like something hot. However, the array of cold meats, cheeses, fruits, juices and cereals should be enough to satisfy the hungriest hikers and sustain them at least until lunch time. The Rieglers even make a decent coffee, which is sometimes not the case in country hotels. On warm mornings (we had several days around 30 degrees), having breakfast on the terrace is an excellent choice.

In the evening, the hotel had a bar and a restaurant, both of which seemed to be well patronised by local people. The menu is rather limited, and didn't change during the 5 days we were there, but the food is of excellent quality and the portions more than adequate. We had the same waiter each evening, and found him to be very pleasant indeed. He and the Rieglers speak quite decent English, so we had a live translation of the menu instead of a written-down one. As with breakfast, on a warm, still evening, dinner on the terrace is a good choice.

The restaurant is closed on Sunday evenings, but we found the walk into town and back wasn't too much of a strain, except for the last 100 yards of the road leading up to the hotel, which is very steep and not ideal to tackle with a full stomach after a few local wines. Speaking of local produce, the Rieglers go out of their way to use whatever they can reasonably get locally, and the wine list has numerous examples of local reds, whites and roses. The first night there we had an excellent bottle of white from a vineyard about 250 yards away across the valley.

One of the things that attracted us to Hanny (apart from its being out of the city centre but close enough to walk to it) was the fact that it is a short walk across the valley to the Jenesien cable car, which (for EUR2.50) will get you up to the mountain village of Jenesien. From here there are several hundred kilometres of walking trails, with enough variety to suit everyone – the tourist office in the town has an excellent guide/map. We enjoyed the Jenesian area a great deal.

Short summary on Hanny – spotless, excellent value for money, friendly hosts but not in your face, very good food and great location. We WILL be back, but next time we'll keep the car.

We haved stayed at the Hotel Hanny several times during the last 4 years and always felt really welcome there. The location slightly outside the city center is actually a bonus since most rooms have balconies with great views over the city. The center can easily be reached by foot in 15-20 minutes via a wonderful pathway along the river (there are also Buses).
Rooms are spacious and modern and have nice bathrooms with windows. The breakfast is simpy incredible with fresh breads, cheeses, cereals, meats, and fruits form the region. The owner makes his own applestrudel (Strudel di Mele) that is served for breakfast - combined with a freshly made cappucino the perfect start every monring.
The hotel has free parking (even a free garage) and bikes can be rented for free. The restaurant is also recommended and one can sit outside in the evening while having a great dinner with views over the city.
We will definetely stay there again on our next trips to northern Italy.

The hotel is surrounded by beautiful views of mountains and vineyards. The breakfast was fresh and plentiful with various meats, cheeses, different kinds of breads and pastries, fresh fruits and joghurt. It was a very pleasant stay and I would highly recommend this hotel.

I stayed in the hotel back in January 2004 and thought it was one of the very best experiences on my holiday in Europe.
This hotel is located about 15 minutes walk from the town centre out among the vineyards on the hills overlooking the town.
It is in a spectacular position and enjoys incredible views of the town and the alps in the distance.
The owners of the hotel are very friendly and put on a sensational buffet breakfast every morning which included among many other things speck, prosciutto, great cheeses (gorgonzola, emmentaler etc.) - easily the best I had on my European trip!
The hotel itself is modern and the rooms are very spacious (unusual in Europe), immaculate and simply furnished.
Considering what I got, the rates were very reasonable.
If you visit Bolzano, don't stay anywhere else!
