What a mix of cultures! We Americans with a French get kind of confused at times in this mix of Germans and Italians, but delightfully so. The narrow streets and tasty gelato provide a base for exploring this amazing region of the mighty Alps.

Take the Funivia Renon to Soprabolzano, and take the tram to the village at the end. Spectacular views and hiking

Well, first it was like - nothing is going on in Bolzano, but then - we were there in Christmas time - over all old city is many christmast markets, which are very traditional, full of amazing handmate things and stuff. You can walk around hours and hours. There are luxury shops with expansive clothes, jewelery, dress... But what is amazing - food. An excellent restaurants around this old city, which you definitely have to try! In the evening than is the city changing - market is closed but there are little cottages where you can buy hot wine, hot apple and other delicious winter drinks. What you can´t miss there is cable car up above Bolzano. Ut´s used normaly like public transport over the hills, it is 10 euro per person, but you get just the best view! When you wanna walk little bit around, I sugest to go visit old residences, which are on the other side of the river. There is also pathwalk, which can lead you to beautifull waterfall! The landscape generally in Bolzano is hillarious. And about accomodation - the cheapest was is Youth hostel You can reserve it via internet - as soon as possible and you can get night for 20 euro per person, breakfast included. Only one unhappines is there - when you are traveling by car, is complicated to find a place without fee.

We spent one night/day here in mid-October on our way from the Dolomites to Lade Garda area. After experiencing the beautiful snow covered peaks of the Dolomites I thought Bolzano would surely be a let down. Not the case at all. The archaeological museum with its Ice Man is a world class, must-see museum. The walks on the outskirts of town are fabulous - beautiful at this time of year. Some reviewers described Bolzano on Sunday as sleepy. It surely wasn't our experience. Seemed like the whole town was out walking, shopping the open air market, playing sports.... Very invigorating. We loved our walk to Castle Roncolo with fabulous views of the vineyards. We could have spent another day.

This visit was not my first visit to Bolzano (#5) and with each visit I find more reasons to return and enjoy the area/attractions. My first visit was the arrival of "Otzi" in 1992 which I find fascinating. All of the updates and work of the museum is continually improving with information about his life and era. My family (4) loved (their first visit to Europe) the shopes, although a bit expensive, and the Soprabolzana area which is beautiful and a feast for the eyes. By using the local travel card, all the museums and transport, including the cable cars, are included in the price. Great deal! The town center has many restaurants, great shops and some entertainment. We will return. Al, Kathy, Ashley & Johnathan
