Description: The “Paulaner Stuben” are inaugurated in September 2005, becoming the first restaurant south of the Brenner with the brand of the prestigious munich brewery “Paulaner”. The restaurant is housed in one of the oldest buildings of the city, the residence “Troilo – Troyburg” dating from the thirteen century, and is able to reach both the shopping archades ”Portici – Lauben” and the street “Silbergasse – Via Argentieri”. The three spacious dining rooms ( “Stuben”) are characterized by beautiful vaulted ceilings and friendly wood furniture can accommodate up to 150 people. In the warm season is set up outside a terrace for about seventy guests with tables and chairs reminiscent of the splendid traditional beer gardens in Munich. The choice of menu is much wider. It ranges in fact from the “classics Paulaner”, brewery typical local dishes such as dumplings, shank and grilled meat served in copper pans, till to the base plates of Mediterranean cuisine such as pasta, vegetables, fish and of course delicious pizzas baked in two variants , the classic round pizza and pizza by the meter served on elegant wooden cutting boards ( “Pizza on board”).The culinary concept behind our “BEERHALL” is in fact the daily search of harmony between the style and tradition of the Bavarian restaurants and the quality of the italian cuisine.

We sat outside on a warm October evening and enjoyed this part of the meal the most. The food was ok, nothing spectacular, but the beer was excellent.

I've visited this bar twice now, and the first time was part of an ice hockey supporters club where we all drank lots of beer and had a great time.

The second time was more intimate where i only had a small number of friends with me. We were remembered as being part of the group so were treated to free snacks and even a free drink. The staff were awesome hosts...........the 2 guys we were served by was James (an Albanian who spoke great English and Italian) and Peter who spoke very little English but was very easy to get on with and understand. Both offered us great service and made our visit a pleasant one.

To be fair, apart from the free pretzels and crisps, we didn't try any food in this bar. We did however, drink copious amounts of Weissbier in massive glasses which was very reasonably priced.

The evening ended with a shake of the hands from the owners and staff, we thanked them for being such great hosts and they thanked us for the custom and for us not getting too rowdy!!

Stopped in for lunch on our last day in Bolzano. Nice dark wooden decor and fast service. I ordered sausage with sauerkraut and sauteed potatoes, my dining partner ordered the 'zuppa canederli' (dumpling soup?), and we got a portion of bruschetta to share.

The food arrived very quickly. The soup itself was a little bit... well, it tasted like it might have come out of a packet (but I'm spoilt by the amazing 'brodo' of Bolognese restaurants). The speck dumplings were very good with a nice homemade comfort food taste and I stole more than my share.

The sausage dish was not enjoyable - the sausage tasted of nothing but salt, the sauerkraut tasted of nothing but vinegar, and the potatoes tasted of nothing. If you put them together, you got something that didn't hurt the tastebuds too much. But there was none of the lovely blending and complementing of flavours that a good plate of sausage, sauerkraut, and potato *can* produce.

The bruschetta was... unexpected? The bread was unremarkable, the tomatoes *had* to have come out of a tube, and the cheese was thick and tasteless. The only way we could salvage it was to scrape off the cheese and tomatoes and use the bread for dunking in the soup. Oh well.

Probably if you have been drinking lots of beer, then anything heavy and filling will be welcome if it can help you stay awake and drink more beer. But there's nothing in the book that says a dish can't be heavy, filling, *and* tasty, and it's a shame that, for the most part, we didn't experience that here.
