“Lovely stay at the Tomato Backpacker's Hotel!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 22, 2013

I went to Torino for a conference and stayed at the Tomato Backpacker's Hotel and can definitely recommend it! It is in a good location (lots of places to eat around) and very near the city centre.
The value for money is really good with free internet and tea/biscuits. And the staff is very nice!!

Although calling itself a backpackers hotel it is so much more. A very friendly welcome - lots of help on places to visit, and recommendations for food and drink. Rooms were extremely clean and warm (it was January and snowy). Great situation with easy access to centre either on public transport or on foot. Close to river Po for lovely stroll.

Tomato Backpackers is definitely more like a hotel than a hostel and is fantastic value for money. The lobby area is lovely, it has a welcoming atmosphere, there is wifi available and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The room and bathroom were very clean and well equipped. The location is excellent, it's in a nice neighbourhood which is a short walk from the train station and the tourist attractions. We had a brilliant stay here and would definitely stay again.

Very friendly and helpfull staff!!! Very central location. Rooms were spacious. It is a backpackers hotel, but i visited this hotel with my husband and we were very satisfied, especially since we only paid 58 euro for the room per night. They also have bikes to rent for 10 euro per day and a kitchen. Private bathrooms.

Got to the hotel cause a great friend of mine who lives in Turin suggested me. It's really close to one of the main train stations in the city - Porta Nuova ( 10 min by foot ).
The neighborhood called San Salvario, is very attractive, full of little shops, restaurants and bars. Quite lively on the evenings, but not noisy at all : the mainly cause is because is quite close to one of the most important universities "The Polytechnique".
In the moment I ve got in the lobby, the "air" that I ve felt was already friendly, People smilling. Colorful decoration. Creativity on little details. Tomaso, the owner is such a nice guy! Service oriented, he tries to make you feel comfortable and in a natural way, will give you all the details about the hotel, and the city. I was given the room nbr 205, single room with a balcony to a peculiar, very italian and attractive courtyard, where you can meet other guests or neighbours ( but not invasive at all, as you can close balcony doors and/or move the curtains ).
The building is an old and beautiful palazzo from early 1900's where it used to stood an old hotel called "Moderno" : ) . My room was in the second floor and you could get through the stairs as well as by elevator. Decoration and equipment are simple with little nice details and touchs, which includes a desk, chair, an open clothe's rack and an open synthetic wardrobe. The sensation is you are in quite nice and austere room. Very clean. The balance between cost and benefits is perfect. 35 euros for a single room per night. The bathroom has a good powered shower, there's also the practical "bidet". I ve stayed during a week, and I really have to say I ve slept incredibly good. The hotel is "green oriented" ( separate garbage, efficient use of the electricity ( sensors in public spaces ), and tries to suggest you use the bike as way to move through the city, which I reccomend! They hire them for 2 euros a day!
Also, they propose less TV and more books, so no Tv in rooms, but a shelf and tables in the lobby full of interesting material to read. Its a place where you have to take advantage of the beautiful courtyard to meet other people or just sit and drink something from the little bar they have. Or you can enjoy the colorful and playful lobby ( soccer desktop game included ). Wifi in all the building free, works great. There's no breakfast, but you have a full kitchen in the sub-soil floor to cook or (nicer) you can get a discount card to go to TEAPOT, a nice and cozy café 50 mts from the hotel where you can have an amazing capuccino and a toasted yummy sandwich for 3 euros ( try it! it's beautiful and nice/kind of intelectual girls who runs the place, will give u a warm welcome! ).
There's a supermarket 50 mts from the door. Downtown and main attractions are 20 min walk or 5 min by bus ( 1.50 eur the ticket ). There's an amazing park in front of the river just 5 min from the hotel, also, where you can run, bike or do any sporting exercise.
I had a great great week at Tomato! They really made me feel like home!

Room Tip: 205 is great for a single room!

Found this hotel by accident. Warm welcome, spacious rooms, great facilities and fantastic neigboorhood. Do not let the name backpackers hostel misleid you. You get service of a hotel with the atmosphere of a hostel.

Anna and Tom are great hosts. Always prefer staying at hostel if there is a great one -- a place to meet new friends and mingle and this hostel is really special, given the quality of hostels are so-so compared to Germany. Tomato is that one. I stayed at a double room for 2 nights -- nothing to complain. I wished to stay for the third but the place was fully sold out -- the host allowed me to store my luggages for a night and so I went to the lovely Langhe from Torino. All in all, I met a few new friends at the hostel (which was always a delight and luck), stayed at a nice neighborhood (quite international and with young and homely vibe), the location is central (within 15 minutes walking to the Torino Porta Nuova railway station or Valentino Park/ Valentino Castle / River Promenade that I enjoyed. There is a nice Trattoria Dausin in the neighborhood and a great bar a few blocks away for Aperitivo. I also enjoyed the Cinema Museum that Anna and her friend Maria Sole's recommended. There is also a "CIANCI, PIOLA CAFFÈ" at Largo iv marzo, 9/b within 20 minutes of walking -- One of the best Food of the Region. At last, I bought

Again, Thanks so much for Tomato's Team work in keeping such a nice place for guests.

Caveat -- Took a SADEM Coach back to Milano Malpensa. Bumped into a strike (service of that coach still maintained), the stop was not neatly marked (which is outside of a coffee bar), the stop is not exactly Porta Susa -- if you go there by **subway** (I should have got off at "P.za XVIII Dicembre"). Up to now, I remain not so sure what exactly happened, but it seems like there is a NEW Porta Susa subway station that was opened in the last couple of years and away from Porta Susa Train station and there is a subway station marked by a name as "P.za XVIII Dicembre (Porta Susa)" -- with "Porta Susa" in bracket "( )". Anyhow, thank you so much for the subway staff's escorts and explanation. Plan ahead and with buffer time to Malpensa -- my grasp of Italian style is A) rules always in-flux, B) improvise, and C) most likely nice people would help you along the way. Karma. That's the fun of a journey.
